happy new year everyone, this might seem like a silly question BUT ... how many of you use kongs ? what do you put in them ?
i use mine a lot of the time & i have put lots of strange combinations of food into it. I am now wondering what everyone else puts in thier's as my imagination is now coming to an end for something new to put in to the kong.
Any i dea's would be great
many thanks in advance
scatty

I don't put anything in my Kongs, my dogs just love them and chew on them.
ttfn :)
Cream cheese & bits of liver cake or Peanut butter & bits of liver cake, fresh, or frozen if you want it to last (used to put in kibble but don't feed it anymore).
I also put their mushed fruit and veggies in then freeze or just plain pieces of fruit & yoghurt :)

i don't put anything in my dogs kongs either, mainly because i just forget!
i have been told that a great one for keeping doggies occupied is to soak dry food in gravy and freeze it. Sounds like it'd take AGES to get through that!

I put pieces of cheese, ham, dairy lea, choc drops even some cat tin food!! (some of these are quiet messy but she loves it!!) and i use mine as a high value toy, she only gets it when the whole family are out of the house, on our return we ask for it back she will fetch it to me and on dropping it, i reward her with a small treat, then put it away for next time!!
(i do wash it first!!) Note i sometimes think she cant wait to get rid of us and when she sees it being filled will wait by the cupboard until we all are ready to go!!!!

Mine love their kongs as well, the pup runs to her cage as soon as I lift the kong to get filled, she then follows me to make sure im putting something in for her, I use different things, they love cheese so I tend to squash this so its harder for them to get it out, I also use their dog food. I only give the kong when im going out.

thank you all for your reply's i tend to use mine for when i go out even if it is only for 5 mins :), i have tried so far ... cheese, dairylee, pepperamie (sp), bicci's, i sometimes put her dinner in it just to make it a little more excitting :)
i havent tried freezing things though, i might try this. I think kongs are great. I also put the things that she likes best at the very top & then pack it hard so she has to work harder to get it (wicked woman lol )
Does anyone have the recipe for liver cake by any chance ??
many thanks

OOOOOOOOOOOH kong stuffing!!!!! welllllll, everything really, peanut butter is a favourite in my house, as is marmite!!!!!!! yum. Yeah, squash the good stuff down to the end, and then fill with hard to extract treats. Mine will go mental for a kong that is basically odd shaped bits of veg (like potato, and celery and carrot) but with about 10 of the titchy cat biscuits in it, and some cream cheese and marmite to weld it all together.
I tend to fill with mainly boring stuff but tiny tasty bits as well, it keeps em looking! if i have to leave one dog alone for any length of time with no other doggies, then i fill up all the kongs and hide them around teh kitchen!!!!!
Emma
Liver cake:
I cup of plain flour
I cup of corn flour
2 eggs
However much garlic you want to use (I throw in a bulbs worth)
and about a 1lb of liver:
Put the liver in food processor and process,
Throw in the rest of the ingredients,
Pour out into a baking tray and
throw in the oven at about 6/7 (gas).
Check after about 15 mins and flip it over for about another 10 mins.
Cool, slice and freeze in bags for when you need it.

Kodi got a Kong for Christmas and you are all giving me wonderful ideas to fill it with! :D :D ATM i put liver treats, chicken meat, pork meat and some ham into hers, it doesnt last long but she loves it! I also heard of people putting a special ice cream into their dogs' Kongs.

You could also look
HERE for some good ideas
Melody :)
cheese, broken up gravy bones, broken up smacko's, jellyfied beef or chicken stock if I have any in the fridge, tiny amount of tinned dog food (don't usually use tinned, but one small tin will fill two kongs for days. Wedge everything down well and refrigerate overnight. If I'm working they get them just as I leave the house. When I'm home and watching them, they keep them occupied for at least an hour.
Does anyone have a recipe for liver cake that doesn't involve blending raw liver? I just can't do this, it makes me feel queasy !!!

:p: :o:
I have thought of just gently frying it and then slowly baking it, anyone done this at all? If so is it any good?
Lindsay

Yes ...I have cut raw liver into snack size bits and then baked them in a low oven setting until they were like little bits of leather ..just make sure there aren't any sharp edges
Thuggy boy LOVES it :)
Melody

Lindsay,
You can boil it with garlic then dice and bake in oven
Anne
Thanks Melody and Anne, I will try both of those suggestions and see how we go; I expect Banya would love either of them :)

Rather you than me, Lindsay! There are two things in this world that are guaranteed to turn my stomach, just by the smell alone, and they're liver and garlic:(

Hi ,
I am reading this and wondering what kind of "choc.drops" you are giving your dogs. I was under the impression that any chocolate is bad. Don't want to be stepping on anybody's toes, but here is a web site about chocolate and dogs. www.vetheart.com/choc.html

You can buy special chocolate drops for dogs ..available in most pet shops :)

I thought that's what you were talking about. Just checking. Sometimes I don't understand, being from the states,What your terms etc. mean. Sorry if it was a silly question.

No question is a silly one :) I know that sometimes our idioms can be confusing :D Anyway ...it is always useful to remind folk about the dangers of giving *proper* chocolate to dogs
:)

"Natural diet" is what I put in mine. She's on dry food(the missis not the dog!!!!!!!!!!joking darling....i love you really x x x and your Mum!!!) but she likes the texture of the wet. She wolfs it down if I give her it in a bowl then runs around, finding things to rip, so I use Kong to keep her occupied and satisfied.....by the way...are there any Kongs for Women??????

I put made up instant mash sometimes mixed with a bit of his usual food (burns) in his Kong and then freeze it overnight. If I give him this before I go out it keeps him going all day. The last time I came home from xmas shopping and he had a perfectly round ball of still frozen mash left in the Kong. It must be really hard to get out!
BTW, Onions and Garlic are poisonous to dogs. I think they have to have a fairly large amount to do any real harm though. Just worth bearing in mind.

I f garlic is poisonous for dogs, why do the "Natural Feeding" paople recommend they have a garlic clove every day to make the animal less susceptible to parasites?

Hi Janet,
Garlic is not, Onions are I believe.

I've heard garlic is good, onions and chocolate is bad.

If you put "garlic toxic dogs" in your browsers search facility you will find many sites that give the reasons why garlic is toxic for dogs (and cats). Garlic is safe only in moderation. But both can cause the red blood cells to break down. It would be worth bearing in mind if your dog is a counter top surfer like mine and pinches a whole bulb (or even a whole string!)
Many things are thought to be poisonous to dogs:
Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (arsenic)
Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
Rhubarb leaves
Mouldy/spoiled foods
Alcohol
Yeast dough
Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
Hops (used in home brewing)
Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
Broccoli
Raisins and grapes
Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

You're right - I took an interest because my friend gives his border collies garlic on a regular basis, and then I read in a magazine not long ago that you can give too much garlic, and it can cause anaemia.

Good site for information on poisoning in dogs (based in america)
http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogpoison.html

Has any one got any advice on what to do if your dog eats something which is poisonous, my dog tries anything and every thing when were out walking, I know in humans certain kinds of poisoning are helped by drinking milk, Are there any good books you could recommend on Dog first aid

This is a great topic. Thanks for all the ideas... I've never really been sure what to put in Dutchess's kong. Just tryed some soft treats smashed into it but that only held her attention for about 10 minutes. I mixed some of her kibble with cream cheese and stuffed the thing full... going on an hour now and she is still busy with it!!!!! That is the longest time I've seen her pay attention to anything (other than the cows :D)!!! Thanks for all the great ideas and that sight is nice too!!!
Are grapes really poisonous to dogs? Mine LOVES grapes

Grapes and raisins are, apparently fatal to dogs in quantities - there was a posting on Yahoo Aussie roundup about an Aussie in the States who was vvery very ill after pinching about half a pound of grapes!

I also know of a dog here in the UK who pinched 'a bag' (could have been as little as 1lb) of raisins - vet denied they were poisonous to dog, she was on intensive drips for 48 hours before having to be pts :-(
Mine love it too - the only side effect is smelly LOL. But the amounts needed to be dangerous I doubt anyone would feed.

Just thought I'd say what a good topic, and that I printed out some pages from the Kong site mentioned above, and I intend to give them to all puppy buyers from me in the future. I always give them a folder full of useful info. and now I will include this too. Thanks!

I love the kong ideas but no matter how difficult I make it my collie takes less than a minute to empty it so it hardly keeps her entertained for long. Perhaps Im just showing off how clever she is!!!

Please pardon the igoramus ? but wot the hell is a Kong, never heard of 1 b4 probably because I don't go out much. Lol.
Maybe my Scottie Katie would like 1, and her older sister Miss Greedy a Yorkie, goes by the name of Pebbles, she can eat 1 more Pig than a tater.
HarryOatcake.

Hi HarryOatcake,
A Kong is a tough hollow rubber dogtoy, a wierd bulbous cone-shape, which bounces erratically when thrown, and can be stuffed with various foody things to keep a dog occupied and stop it getting bored and destructive.
Hope this helps :)
