Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Toy breed B*tch will not stand, we're on day 15

Hi

I wonder if someone can advise me.

My (maiden) bitch is on day 15 of her season today and will not stand nor flag for any dog (she has in the past). She is now not bleeding and swelling has gone down somewhat but the vulva is still very soft.
I own an unproven boy, the intention was to have him mate her but she constantly fights him off and I do not want this dog to be scared of bitches because he will be used for stud for the future.
So I abandoned using him and went to our breeder friend, to use her stud 150miles away. My logic was, maybe she wont stand for my dog as he lives with us but she will for a dog she doesnt know.
So off we went late one evening (day 12) again all she did was growl and go for the stud. So this was abandoned.

Im not sure if she seasons short/long or perhaps its a split season?
I am off to vet with her tonight, to see what he says. I did not do any ovulations tests on her and in hynsite I now know I should of (I will be next time). I thought as I owned the boy I wouldnt need to bother as he would be my indication ( and he was, its just she wont allow it). Both of the dogs wanted to mate her but she would not allow it.
I own a toy breed and would like to clarify they are annually both health tested for their breed spesific needs.

Thanks in advance

Hi, It could be that you have missed the ovulation time as some are very early or you may even be too early? (friends girls won't stand til day 18-19)
I also know a bitch who wouldn't stand for a dog when she was actually ready because of an "up-and-over"  vaginal tract which was causing her pain when the male tried to mate with her.
A visit to your vet might shed more light on the problem.

thanks paula.

I feel you are right with the up and over thing as the owner of the stud said that her vulva wasnt tilted forward, so she could have problems being mated.

I will ask the vet

many thanks

my bitch has just been to stud and she wouldn't stand until day 20 she kept nearly taking his head off so the stud owner suggested we try her other stud  so took her there she was the same so we decided to leave her and wait in the car and sure enough they were tied within five mins seems she didn't want to do it in front of mum and dad.

That could also mean she's either not ready yet, or has gone over and is shrinking back.

How have they been together in previous seasons? Maybe she thinks your boy isnt suitable to be the sire, whereas my girl is a tart with dogs she knows but wont entertain those she doesnt. Things never go as planned so dont think your the only one!

If it is too late this time she may allow your boy next time, some bitches do need a dominate stud to 'put them in thier place' who are not aggressive but know there job so dont take any nonsense. She may also just not be ready yet. My girl this time was mated day 18 and we were successful :)

You mention that your boy is not proven.  I have toys, and would say that an unproven boy is no indication whatsoever.  He has no experience to guide him.  My most experienced boy will sniff and lick a bitch, and then sit down beside her.  He just won't waste his energy if she doesn't smell right.

My boy who has only sired one litter, does not yet understand the niceties!  So gets told off for his efforts.  I'm guessing that your lads are trying just because they're lads.  :-)  As opposed to lads who know what they're doing!  :-)
