Hi

Can anyone advise me on how long an adult yorkshire terrier should be able to go on a walk for?? i'm looking into getting one of these breeds and wondered because of the size of the dog.

Thanks
Donna

Dont know about yorkies but my pomx will take all she is given that means most days she goes out with my gsd and will be out for about 4 hours wanding through the woods and fields. She is always up for it. I think often because they are little we assume they arent able to take a lot of excercise

hey,

i take my yorkie out with my GSD's and collie and he lasts just as long as them quite happy running about for a hour + every day.

No personal experience, but a neighbour has a yorkie and she will go rambling/trekking for hours on end, very robust little dogs from the seem of things :) (obviously this is as an adult, not a pup)

My Cavaliers as adults are happy to do several miles, I know Yorkies are smaller but I am sure if you build up gradually and keep the weight and fitness right they will be able to do a decent length walk once adult.

Our Yorkie was always fine with long walks. He loved running with the bigger dogs at the park such as GSDs and labs, he could even out run them!

Donna, please remember that, if you're buying a puppy, then you will not be able to walk it for hours.

The "golden rule" for dogs of any breed, is 5 minutes walk per month of age.  So, at 3 months, that means 15 minutes walk per day.  And that is literally 7.5 minutes there, and 7.5 minutes back.  Take into consideration just how much sleep a 3 month old needs.  And just how much exercise they will get at home, just from normal playing, both in the house, and in the garden.

My Yorkies love exercise, but they were limited to the 5 minute rule, and built up gradually, an extra 5 minutes per month.  If you know all this - I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but it is always important that newbies know the rules too!  :-)
