Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / day 17 still not flagging/standing
- By darcie [gb] Date 12.04.11 19:25 UTC
Hi everyone
My German Pointer bitch is on day 17 of her season and still not flagging or standing for the stud dog and is generally showing no interest in him.  I had her tested with premate at the vets on day 10, 12, 13 and finally 14 when she was given a C3 reading.  I took her to the stud dog on day 15, with no interest and again today on day 17.  She is a maiden bitch of 3 1/2 years. Today she did one flagg and the dog got very excited but it never happened again. The stud dog is definetly very interested in her and if she would stand and or flagg for him he would definetely mate with her.
What \i am wondering is if it is normal for her to ovulate so late.
I have heard that these larger breeds tend to be late ovulators.
I am going back to the stud dog on day 19 to see if we have any more luck.  I am sure we have not missed her ovulation.  The stud dog is pretty mystified too and being such a gentleman he just wants to get the ok form her.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

What did this C3 Reading signify, I am assuming not yet ovulating?  I have a bitch who is not ready for mating until days 18 - 22, where all her relatives have been days 14 - 18.

Hi thanks for reply.

c3 means that she is about to ovulate within the next 48 hours according to the vet, which is why I took her to stud dog the next day.  But it seems what the premate tests predict are not necessarily what my dog is doing.
I have read some messages about these blood tests not being very reliable.  As I said I am sure she has not gone past her ovulation and she is still bleeding a small amount of red blood.  It is reassuring that your dog is also a late ovulator.
What breed is your dog.  I would be interested to see if she was a large breed.

medium size northern breed.

thing is many dogs won't mate a bitch until she is ripe (at least two days after ovulation), so perhaps 4 days after the last test that says she was coming up to ovulating.

I have in fact had few bitches showing obvious flagging as maidens even though they were happily mated eventually, they have varied from the bored to the humping the dog kind.

The bitches that have had litters and are really keen to be mated on subsequent occasions have often been quite exaggerated with their flagging and vulval lifting. ;)

Thank you for that.  I think it is a case of trial and error, and reassuring to know that other bitches are out there with a similiar cycle. but a lot of hard work for me as the stud lives 2 hours away and the purpose of the blood tests was that \i could acheive a mating in one or two visits.  Will try again on day 19, in two days and again on day 21.  \hopefully will get gthere eventually.

Will let you know

my bitch finally stood today on day 20 and she had been flagging for about 3 days also she would not stand while we were  there all day trying and we decided to leave her and wait in the car they were tied within 5 mins

Losing blood is no indicator at all.  One of my girls bleeds heavily throughout the matings, and through to the end of her normal season.  She still catches.  I have had a toy breed mate on day 28 and produce a litter, so I don't think size of breed is relevant.

Do you have a neutered male in the house that could lick her and such?  My aunt had a dobe bitch that wouldnt flag and my aunt brought out her min pin and he licked her, tried his darndest to mate her, and basically told her what to do!  Anyways, she started flagging and they got the breeding the next day.

The best time for mating is 24-48 hrs + *after* ovulation, not before.  If she was 48 hrs from ovulating, could well still have been too early.

Hi again all
Well its day 19 and took bitch to dog again and still no luck. Dog still very interested in her and is desperte to mate with her.  Its a long journey, so in order to waste any more days \i took her to her to vet in afternoon to have another premate done.  Guess what vet says she should be mated immediately - told her that she was mated 4 hours ago and with no success.  \i really dont know what to do now - do \i take her again tomorrow or leave it till Saturday.  \i really dont understand how she can be ready now according to vet and my bitch says no.

What is the female doing that makes you think she isn't ready? Some will flirt alot and others are confused and need to be held and reassured whilst the mating takes place.

Is the stud owner helping out as she must have done this before and know what to expect from her males.

Did the vet say if she was ovulating now or is time running out because she ovulated a couple of days ago?

do you stay with your bitch because my bitch wouldn't do anything while i was there just kept trying to rip his head off as soon as i left they were tied within minutes
