Topic Dog Boards / General / Accredited breeder?
- By Thompson1 [gb] Date 11.04.11 19:19 UTC
Hi guys just a quick question I was reading some dog articles And mentioned about the accredited breeder scheme. It mentioned stock should have relevant health tests carried out. However one off my grooming clients advertises herself as being registered but never health tests but does provide all the other contracts etc is testing required 100% or are they allowed to be flexible providing the do the rest? I'm confused lol x

If health checks are recommended then they should be done. Otherwise the breeder is contravening the rules and should be reported. However at the moment the results of such tests do not seem to be a concern of the KC..stupid in the extreme...but we can but hope things will change in the future.
The ABS is not yet an indication of a good breeder but it is a start, however small.

So basically a breeder can get the tests done and keep results secret from customers?

They would need to show the results to prospective puppy byers...but there is nothing to stop them breeding from a badly effected animal.

Yeah I thought that  because you often see kc registered and tested but don't oftern say clear etc

The results of the parents will show on the puppies registration certificates.  IT is true that the system at the moment requires testing but not passes (which many of us find ridiculous) but as far as I am aware they will not accept litter registrations if the testing has not been done - a friend registered a litter last year and had a phone call back almost straight away saying the eye tests were out of date so the registration could not go ahead - this was an instance of the Vet taking ages to send them is, so she had to post her copies so the registration could go through in time for the paperwork to be ready to go with the pups.  I suppose it depends on how vigilant the person doing the paperwork at the KC is.

OF course, this only applies to a breed with health testing required.

The KC ask people to let them know of anyone contravening the rules and health tests relevant to the breed MUST be done by ABs (even if they can disregard the result.)
