Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / day 58, worried about small litter
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 06.04.11 00:21 UTC
hey everyone, i have a small breed who is on day 58. we didnt get her scanned as signs were there to say she was in pup.  i was feeling alot of movement from about day 40 however am not feeling much anymore.
i struggle to feel anything at moment and only sometimes do.  im now starting to think she may have reabsorbed a couple and may only have 1 or 2 pups should i be worried about getting an xray? or just wait another couple of days and see how things go?
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 06.04.11 00:25 UTC
As time goes by there is less room to move around, I found most movement went on when the dam was asleep.

Does she look alot smaller than she did before.

If you are really worried then speak to your vet.

she doesnt look any smaller, but she doesnt look any bigger either from about day 40.
she has been extremely fussy but once she starts eating she seems to be fine, however she only has a tiny amount for breakfast today

hi,

have you got a stethoscope?? i used this throughout pregnancy and during whelping. i also scanned and was told 2, tilly had hers yesterday and thought after 2 we were done, but i could hear another heartbeat, valuable piece of kit.

good luck x

morning of day 59 a little digging in the whelping box for the first time, and off her food, has also become protective of her whelping box

mine went quiet before they arrived.

Oo sounds like its your turn, tilly had her within 24 hours once digging and shredding started.
Good luck and keep us updated if you can :-)

Anymore? hope things are going smoothly xx
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 09.04.11 07:34 UTC
still just the one pup and its been 3.5 hours, briar is very relaxed and only panting slightly.  might give her some oxytocin now but not too sure what to do otherwise. as i thought contractions wouldnt start with 1 pup
- By lare73 [gb] Date 09.04.11 09:03 UTC
hey, congratulations on your first pup, any sign or anymore more yet?? di you know how many in her belly???

very exciting, xx
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 09.04.11 09:49 UTC
Have you got caulogholum to help with the contractions.  Think you supliment with ice cream or something to encourage contractions.
- By JeanSW Date 09.04.11 10:56 UTC
I have toy breeds, and would never leave a bitch 3.5 hours after having given birth to one pup.  It is so easy to tell if their is one more to come, and, if you can feel it, get her to the vet.
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 09.04.11 10:56 UTC
Have you tried "feathering" her to stimulate the contractions to restart. Give Nutro/vet drops to boost her energy levels

How many pups are you expecting?

I hope she progresses soon
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 09.04.11 11:09 UTC
tried feathering before we went to vets, had an xray and there was only 1 pup so we were extremely lucky she had the puppy on her own :)

I am pleased to hear that all is well with her and the pup, it will have Mum all to themselves.
- By lare73 [gb] Date 09.04.11 11:22 UTC
hi poderpuffgirl, congratulations! was getting tense here waiting for news, eek, relieved all is well and mum and pup doing well, think i might have missed but is pup a boy or girl??

enjoy more sleeplessnights, im on day 5 post-whelp and not sure what im running on here because had hardly any sleep, but so worth it :-)

ah, just relooked, a little black girl - lovely, told you i was tired hehe.
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 09.04.11 12:54 UTC
pup ended up being a dark sable girl but we only realised this well after it was born. pup and mum doing good so far an should end up a nice fat healthy pup with how much milk mum has.   1am here and just going to bed for a much needed sleep

thanks everyone for the support
ashley, briar and wee pip squeak

So glad mum and girlie doing well, xx
Nothing here yet.... just a little digging...
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 10.04.11 21:53 UTC
poor puppy doesnt know how to suckle, she has only suckled 5 times with our help. i have been supliment feeding but i still dont think im getting enough into her so we are heading onto the vet today for some tube feeding
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 11.04.11 01:26 UTC
update from the vets, puppy has been given fluid and antibiotics, there is nothing obvious wrong but temp is down on verge of hypothermia, have been told to just keep trying like i am but not get my hopes up
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 11.04.11 06:09 UTC
just started suckling on her own, :)
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 11.04.11 07:06 UTC
That's good news for you.  If she was very cold it would explain why no suckling as she wouldn't be able to digest it.
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 11.04.11 07:34 UTC
Have you got Nutri/vet drops, they will give her energy in a small amount of fluid which in turn will help her suck and stay warm.

I hope things pick up for her
- By powderpuffgirl [nz] Date 11.04.11 08:08 UTC
pup shouldnt of been cold, we had a hot water bottle, heat pad and a lamp if temp dropped there for her, vet thought she might of had fluid in her lungs, but i am happy to say that puppy is doing heaps better
- By Henri3402 [gb] Date 11.04.11 08:27 UTC
Glad to hear she's coming on, hope she continues to improve.  Best wishes.
