Topic Dog Boards / General / what breed?
- By helensdogsz Date 08.04.11 07:29 UTC
As I get older I am finding the collies harder to manage. Although I love them and enjoy walking them and doing agility, health problems mean I am going to have to down size my dogs.
As money is getting tighter too i am thinking of getting a couple of smaller breed dogs and breeding from them to make a little extra money. Therefore I need something fairly easy to whelp preferably not prone to caesareans. A popular breed which won't be too hard to sell. I will obviously do all the health tests and am planning on showing them but will need to make my hobby pay for itself to an extent.
I like French bulldogs. They seem to sell for a reasonable sum but I think they are prone to caesareans. Chihuahuas are very sweet but are a bit small for me and have small litters. I don't like very hairy dogs so Shih tzus and Lhasa Apsos don't appeal.
Chinese Cresteds look nice and seem to be popular but i am not sure how easy the skin care is. Cavaliers are out as I wouldn't know where to start with the SM. Has anyone else any suggestions for a small easy to breed and sell short coated breed?

I really do hope your joking re the breeding reasoning.
- By Carrington Date 08.04.11 08:00 UTC
Frankly, I'm gobsmacked that you would put up a post like this on a responsible breeding site.

Your sole purpose is to try to make money from breeding, you make no bones about it at least you are honest. When and if you get this new breed, what happens when the dogs you have can no longer be bred from, what happens if they are infertile or have problems, what happens if when mature they are not to breed standard if your only purpose for these dogs is to breed, what happens to these dogs if they don't fit in with your plan?

You're having a laugh, aren't you?!!

Why would smaller dogs be any easier than the collies?

Unless you're intending to breed puppy-farm style, you are not going to make money and if you think you are then you really, really do need to find out a little bit more about breeding. Just as an example, I mated one of my bitches recently ... to get to just the mating - no guarantees of whether pregnant or not - that has cost close to £1,000.

Puppies are lives, not commodities to sell in order to finance a hobby: but will need to make my hobby pay for itself

Besides which, if you decide on a hobby and it needs to pay for itself, find a hobby that doesn't.

OK, now you can give the good news ... that your post was just to have a laugh :-)

I hope this is a joke.

The price of raising a litter correctly is costly in itself. Just because a breed whelps easily doesnt mean complications wont happen and your bitch need a c-section. Health tests are costly. Feeding mum and pups is costly. Frankly if you want to make money get an extra job.

Even if you did make money on 1 litter doesnt mean you wont lose money on the second litter.

Breeding for money is never a good idea. It makes people cold towards the pups...not the sort of breeder I would buy from.

I really hope so, though April Fools day has long passed. :-D

Very true this bit!

This must be a joke or wind up, she's been on the forum long enough to know how we feel on here about that sort of behaviour.

I dont think I will ever understand why someone would joke about such a thing. :(
But I do hope its a joke.

Nope nor me ecspescially with the way things are on here atm, I'm beginning to wonder if there is a JH conspiracy going on lol with them trying to combust the forum ( been watching the x files lol )

To be honest who on here is going to agree with that sort of breeding? No one. Many of us on here keep at least 1 puppy back from every litter and are happy to shed out £1000's without batting an eye lid. :)

And well.......I have no love for JH....at all.

I have not seen the x files for years.

Well I know for sure I'm £4000 down on my show hobby in 2 years, I just don't see how anyone with a ounce of decency can use puppy farming to finance themselves :( disgraceful

You are not wrong. I dont know how anyone can see their dogs as pound signs £££. My dogs are first and foremost my pets. One boy I did a 15 hour car journey to get as a puppy. Perfect everything.....sadly he's grown up into a fine example of the breed yet has a problem meaning he cant be bred. He is still here with us because I could not bare to rehome him just because he couldnt be bred. Then again I am a big softy when it comes to animals. :D

The hardworking, responsible breeders on this forum do not use their beloved dogs as cashcows!

Anything not fitting in with my plan would have to be sold.

I am planning to develop a self whelping line. I won't breed from a bitch that needs a Csection

Unfortunately how people feel about a subject no longer matters on this forum. People can post what they like regardless of what the majority of people want.
- By Boody Date 08.04.11 08:48 UTC
Now now helenzdogs I've rumbled your cunning plan lol, I know you don't really believe in farming but it is a fair point :)
- By helensdogsz Date 08.04.11 08:56 UTC
OK. You got me. Maybe I will get banned from the forum ?
- By Alysce [gb] Date 08.04.11 08:58 UTC
Phew!  Don't do that!  You ruined my tea and crumpets!!
- By Boody Date 08.04.11 09:01 UTC
Thing is threads like this usually do get pulled or locked, freedom of speech only applies to certain subjects.

You naughty girl, I was in terrible fear you had turned to the dark side. :-)

Maybe I will get banned from the forum ?

Or be given a platform and megaphone. :-D

probably for the best.

Sorry all. I just felt like making a point but soon realised that the people it affected was you good people not the policy makers. I won't do it again

And boy do we need some laughter, I'm so desperate I've started to read FOS's diary at the asylum, some light reading, (until it gets closed) closest thing to HG we've got. :-D
- By Merlot [gb] Date 08.04.11 10:37 UTC
Why not go for one of the new designer breeds...a nice designer cross..have to think a new one up though ...maybe an Italian Chin...
Lots of Hybrid Vigour, no vet fees, lots of puppies, no health checks to do, no C sect's Mega dosh price......
I could go on....

Hmmm - not sure that she would relish the comparison :) :) :) (HG that is)
- By Carrington Date 08.04.11 12:09 UTC
Ummm.... maybe not, just the flair of writing, not the personality. :-D :-D If a bun hits the back of my head in a minute I'll know she was not amused. :-D
