Topic Dog Boards / Health / Border Collie - loss of use of back legs
- By Anwen [gb] Date 07.04.11 14:51 UTC
I'll make this as short as I can:

My friend's daughter has an 11 yr old BC who has recently had her spleen removed. Prior to that, she's been very fit & healthy. Since the op she's been having problems with her back legs and on her last visit the vet told her that it was nerve damage & the options were either another operation (costing £xxxxxs) or a trolley. Having recently lost her job, the daughter just doesn't have that sort of money but loves that dog to pieces.

Just wondered if anyone had similar experiences or suggestions.

Sorry to hear of the problems, had a 4yr GSD who was fine after and Rott who had hers removed at 10 1/2 with no ill effects.

Has she tried contacting the PDSA as she has lost her job they may well help her. :-)

Thanks Carrington - just phoned my friend with that suggestion (don't know why I didn't think of it!). Last time she applied for housing benefit she was told she was "just above the limit" to qualify. She's working 5 hrs a week!! Think she may try again though.
Tatty 'ead - I don't know if the 2 are connected. We had a GSD who had the op years ago. She did go off her legs  about 6 months later.... but she was 13/14 .... and a GSD so I doubt they were connected either.

Would her vet do a referral?

i dont know if there is a connection, either, but years ago my 12year old border collie had a fast growing mammary tumour removed from a hind teat, itd gone from the size of a marble to the size of a grapefruit in a week.Almost the minute itd healed, she lost the use of her hind legs.If your friends daughter decides to go for a trolley, you can sometimes get them second hand.We did when my GSD lost the use of her hind legs.Just make sure its a simple design,as the one we got was fancy, and was supposed to fold when the dog lay down, etc,I dont know if it was faulty, but she never did really take to it,yet Ive seen other dogs on trolleys loving them.Id also try the pdsa again, also, the rspca can offer help with vet bill costs.Good luck.
