Hi Im wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice. My breed suffer with kidney problems and so I do upc testing with all my dogs. I have a 5 year old bitch who had a stunning litter last year and Im hoping to breed from her on her next season. Her last 2 test results were 0.17 and 0.2. I am just a little bit worried as she has suffered cystitis twice in the last year (treated with abs) and have been told off another breeder that she will probably get a false positive (high) result. I have been monitering her water intake after her last bout of cystitis and she hardly drinks anything which obviously wont help matters. Her health in general is great and tbh she is in lovely fit condition but I would like to know if anyone else has had problems testing bitches which suffer from water infections? Also is it true that it will effect the result a great deal?

Thanx

Hi Danielle my breed also has to be UPC tested and anything 0.3 or above shouldn't be bred from. If she is still suffering from cystitis I wouldn't test her until it has totally cleared up but once it is cleared I couldn't see how it would give a false result. What type of food are you feeding her as assuming she isn't fed on dry she may be getting enough water from her food. Another test that is available now is scanning for PKD which unfortunately does not show up on a UPC test. The scan detects wether the kidnets are normal or if there are any cysts present.

Hi she was scanned last year for PKD and all was fine. I wouldnt upc test until her water infection had cleared but my vet has told me to try and get her to drink plenty of water as her urine is very concentrated at the mo. She is also due in season but due to the water infection last time i was unable to test her when I had planned. Fingers crossed I can get her sorted before she comes into season lol. Thanks for your reply.

It might be best to give a course of antibitocs then wait a few weeks before re testing. Your vet can also draw urine straight from bladder this prevents any worries of outside interference. My vet does it this way and it costs an extra £10, well worth it in my opinion.
