Topic Other Boards / Foo / phone calls - trying to get into our computer
- By ceejay Date 07.04.11 13:53 UTC
We keep getting phonecalls from 'Microsoft' saying because of your recent problem with your computer will you please press the windows button on your keyboard along with the R.  My husband pretends to go along with it and then acts stupid to waste their time. It is so annoying that these phone calls are getting more and more devious.  Yesterday we had another from 'Sky' to tell us that our £8 a month that we pay for insurance is coming up for renewal.  We don't pay anything but it has been a year since we moved into our new house.  Somehow they have this knowledge and target our phone number.  I suspect Sky sell our telephone numbers. I laughed at one who said that my sky box is now out of guarantee.  We did not do what a lot of people did when we moved and cancel our subscription and take out a new one at the new address so our equipment has been out of guarantee for a long time.

when they told me that I told them that if it broke I would just cancel my subscription ;)

Quite - we now have a modern tv with freeview digital channels and internet access for I player - we don't need Sky any longer.  Except for the sports :-(

Had one here. Phone call from microsoft to say we were sending malwear and our PC needed to be cleaned. They then said they were employed by microsoft to do this, told us to log into a site which would give them control over our Pc for them to clean it. When I demanded to know who they were, which company and a contact phone number they wanted to know why whilst refusing to give this info. I said I was going to check with the Police.....the language I received was worse than what i clean up after my dog has raided the bin for the take out curry cartons! LOL. Seriously, they sound very convincing and make you feel you are likely to be charged with a criminal offence if you don't do what they say. Goodness knows what could happen if they got in the computer, so everyone needs to be aware of them.

As soon as you realise you are receiving one of these calls just put the phone down, don't say anything. They will soon get fed up and stop ringing. If you engage in any sort of dialogue, they will think that they have a chance of you complying with their requests. You then go on a 'suckers' list and will get more and more calls.

I simply leave my 'phone off the hook for a good hour or so afterwards and let them waffle away to themselves.

My husband thinks that as long as he keeps them talking they are not trying to defraud anyone else.  Yes I think we are on the sucker's list - we had yet another unavailable call not long afterwards.

What I laughed about was that I muttered to my husband - we have 3 computers in this household - how do they know which one you are using!  So he asked the question - which computer is it?  The woman answered 'Yes' and then just prattled on.

I had on last week saying my Service provider had  reported to them that my broadband was running much slower than it shoudl be and wanted them (the calling company) to run software to clean up the problem.  I asked who "they" were and the caller simply carried on (from a script I think) asking me to open Windows - when told I didn't have windows he got quite confused and tried to convince me I msut have becasue "everyone has windows" - reply from me "Not with a Mac they don't" - silence from caller, then phone slammed down.

Unfortunately my Mother In Law actually fell for their phone call and gave them access to her lap top. Fortunately she is so computer illiterate that she isn't allowed to do anything that includes bank details or dredit cards on her laptop my father in law does all that stuff from his one so they can keep track of it. My hubby ad to go through the pc to find out what they had loaded onto it and found a nasty little spy ware on it; took us ages to get rid of it. I had a phone call from the same people 2 days later and told them exactly what I thought of them and eventually they hung up on me!

I had these calls for about a week.   Very annoying.

Then I did my forgetful old lady act....  Keeps them on the line for ages :-D

Hellooo?  <listens>  Whaaat?  <listens>  Just a minute.....  goes away.... comes back..... Helloooo? <listens> What? <listens>  Computer?    just a minute......  etc. etc.   after about  15 minutes I told them we didn't have a computer - they declared everyone has one    My answer was "do they?"

So much fun !   LOL
