Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / should I bath my bitch?

morning,

pups had their check up this morning and are doing really well, vet also happy with mum and she has contracted back nicely.
Has given us a calcium supplement (vet cal). Her milk is coming through as well. Saw the studs owners today, they have been a great help to me during the whole process and are delighted with the pups as they are perfect so far, daddy is very handsome and excellent breed standard and my girl is also an exceptional example, so should have good pups, have 2 girls to choose from, but waiting to see how they develop, no rush.

not had much sleep again, but par of the course, will catch up when they find new home at 12 weeks, so not long :-)

only one question today, when would be good to bath mum? she has cleaned herself nicely but think there is scent on her and shes keeps biting her hind legs, vet reckons she just needs a bath to wash any discharge away. so any tips would be nice, thanks again :-)

I'm sure that we will all do slightly different things, I give my girl a shower a couple of days after around her back end, underbelly and ears just to clean off any mess during whelping and cleaning the pups, I just use warm water and give her a good dry off, she is clean and fresh and then back to the grindstone of being a mum. :-)

Same here, I did trim Ellie's back feathering a little, but still needed to give a quick wash round that end, then thoroughly dried.

I used unscented baby "wet ones" the day after to get any gunk off her tail and hairy backend, when dry I combed them all out, she coped with keeping herself clean after that with me checking her out twice a day for any abnormal smell which signals infection.

As it was Xmas time, weather not nice and her being long coated I didn't want to wet her all over or distress her by removing her from the room where the pups were to have a bath or shower.

Remember the uterus is still open to any fluids entering and risking infection.

My breed is short coated & extreamly clean so I have never needed to bath/shower or even wet wipe them after whelping. Other breeds may be different

Wet wipes and combine here too.

For a start my bitches would not be happy away from their babies the length of time a bath would take and also they would take ages to be dry, with towelling off it would take a full day (I don't use hair driers).

Depends on breed and size I think.  I have a toy breed with pantaloons/feathering that gets quite bloody.

I try to wait until day 3 before putting bum end in the shower, and just shampoo the bits that need it.  I can't take too long, as they just get distressed at being away from pups.

However, I only towel dry, and put them back as fast as I can.  Any dampness soon dries out.
