Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / strange behaviour from bitch

Hi,
I have a question about my bitch who whelped yesterday.
She is feeding her pups well and not a bad night, today however she has gone a bit frantic
I changed the bedding and she was not happy, shes paced around. Shes panting but know thats normal what im.not sure about is she is trying to pull her hair from her hind legs, any ideas?
Sheis just not settling.
Typically when i spoke to the vet this morning this was not happening and hes happy to see mum and pups tomorrow for check up. So, is the lack if sleep making me worry too much or is it something else?
Thanks

It is a bit early on but anything out of the ordinary, especially with the bitch being restless, you do need to consider eclampsia. Or, as it IS so early on -a dead pup that hasn't been passed yet. I'd expect panting but not pacing, most bitches won't leave their pups for the first few days even to drink, eat or toilet and have to be persuaded to go outside.

If she was mine I'd see the vet today, not tomorrow, to play safe.

Did you get all the placentas? There could be a retained one.

She will be getting contractions when the pups feed so she may connect that with having more pups.

If she doesn't settle then she needs to see the vet.

Giving her something rich in calcium won't do any harm as a precaution, I use yogurt, cottage cheese and goats milk but also have calciboost on hand for emergency use.

Hi, yes all placentas came away, just spoke to vet, shes not contracting so thats good thinks shes a bit shell shocked but bring a good mum. Also think i am fretting and shes picking up my vibes, so going to relax and observe.
And shes more settled again. :-)

Mine looked a little spaced out the next morning and not quite with it.  i put it down to being tired, she didn't sleep the first night at all.  I gave her a little extra cal-d and she went to toilet.  Right as rain after that.

Try taking her  to the toilet for her bowels.
