A bitch i know is currently on day 21 of season. Blood from day one has been dark, thick and gooey. No standing, swelling, flagging or interest in anything mating wise. Im starting to think she has something wrong internally, her owner says she was like this on previous seasons. Other than that shes herself eating drinking normally, no bad odours and the blood is fresh but looks like the loss a bitch experiences after whelp. My own girl came into season a week after and shes following the textbook, but im clueless as to her.

A vet said nothing to be concerned about and things may change as she ages, already 2.5 years how long should it take to change and dont want a first litter too old. Not following the usual estrus at all. Also as this is not normal i advised they get her spayed as i can see this leading to pyo in the future. What could be wrong hormonal imbalance, cysts? Anyone experienced anything similar?

louise are the gaps between seasons shorter then normal?

As you know prolonged season and short gaps with my girl revealed cystic ovaries.

I also had a rottie girl that was exactly the same as amber and she developed pyometra which i am sure was all to do with the hormonal inbalances so you are right to be concerned about possible pyo from my own experience.

Vet said nothing to be concerned about but i take there words with a pinch of salt nowadays. Usual 6 month cycles. The strings of gooey blood only come out when shes mobile or been for a wee so im imagining the blood going bad inside her and causing an issue. Its very thick, try wiping it off the floor with some kitchen roll and its like a mucus bogey sorry, like if you drop an egg white best way to describe consistancy! if shes day 21 now and most girls are on there way out of season by now, ive said its a wait and see kind of thing but if she just comes out of season no sign of a fertile time then spay her to eliminate the risk. She must feel horrid poor girl.

The problem with dogs is that very few of them read the text books. So whilst many may stay in season only 21 days (ie textbook-ish) there are exceptions, being in season less time or more! Without wanting to appear rude ... just like humans. I know many ladies who bleed just 3 days and also many who bleed for 3 weeks :-(

I have one girl who is in season around 3 weeks, but one who is still in season for many more days later!! She was very successfully mated days 27-32 last year.

Sadly, dogs like humans, rarely conform to 'text book' criteria! If vet says nowt to worry about & bitch fit & healthy, I'd go with that. :-)

Its the thickness of the blood thats concerning me and its really dark as if the first day of season. I know my own girl had a long season and was mated day 26, but yet she still followed the 'normal' pattern it was just longer. But this girls blood is really thick and still is and were on day 22. The male isnt interested in her and just sniffs and walks away. Doesnt even test her. They have had a quote for a spay op and will go and speak to the vet when they next go in for boosters in a few weeks time. I might go with them to see what they say. I dont want a phone call in 7 months time saying lulus full of puss and needs emergency operation. Plus if she did have pups females may have the same reproductive issues and its guess work to if she has the hormonal capabilities to be in whelp and deliver to term. I just see problems ahead.

Not sure about the thickness of the blood. Can't say that I've particularly looked at that in my girls, but then if it was 'sticky' maybe I'd be a bit more aware of it.

Still time for someone else to come along with advice :-)

It literally hangs from her back end about 4 inches long and dangles until it drops or goes on her legs/tail.

maybe a blood test might help to see whats happening or a scan ??? does sound like what is lost after having pups dont it!

My  bitch bleeds like this.  You described it perfectly like an egg white(TMI!!) and is quite dark.  It normally lightens to a red colour about the time she ovulates(day11-14) and then goes back to the darker colour again for another 2-3 weeks.  Never seen her go pink ever!  Blood flow is also quite heavy compared to my other girls and seems to be in season forever!  My bitch has had 2 successful matings/litters so maybe it's just normal for your girl too.

PS  I don't think it'll be much longer before I spay her but that would just be for my convience as the blood flow is quite hard to live with.
Edited to add, I would probably test her for ovulation next season so as not to miss.  My stud dog used to take a dislike to some girls and he just wouldn't be interested even if they were right on their day with the tail swinging all over the place!  The dog you are testing her with is maybe not interested in mating her?

We have a girl who used to have very long seasons with heavy dark blood.  On speaking to someone in our breed I was advised to give her Sepia 200C, one tablet per week,  I gave her it for 8 months till her next season, what a difference, she had "normal" seasons after that.

Like to add an end to this. Said bitch would be 33 days into season and they phoned to say they had a tie this morning. Thick blood went a week a go and shes been getting lighter all week. Will see in 9 weeks if she has puppies.

As i originally feared this bitch did go on to develop a raging pyo and had to be spayed. Knew it wasnt 'normal' from the onset, she is recovering and on antibiotics.
