OK - New day new problem.

Started weaning, dogs love it,pooh has finally started to firm up. All pups are happy and gaining weight, but I have two that cough - its not really even a cough, more a wretch - does this ever happen as they are getting used to solids ? or should i be really concerned ? was up all night watching them (usually hubby does noght shift)
:-(

What are you weaning them with? Is it possible that the food is too lumpy and making them retch and choke?

or conversely too runny and they are getting ti going down the wrong way or too fast.  You want it like baby-food/porridge and completely smooth.

Oh just to reassure you worry is the normal state of mind right from mating to when pups get to 12 years of age in new homes.

There is enjoyment too, but the overriding feeling when breeding is worry for me.

Thanks i thought i was a complete nutter. I love my puppies dearly but the worry and stress has completely taken over i just want to do the very best for them and hope i do every thing right.

Piratebear i really feel for you. my pups are 6 1/2 weeks old and i am now beginning to relax slightly.

Mine are the same age.

Hate to tell you that won't last as the next set of worming looms, hoping they are not squitty just as they start leaving for new homes, if any are still homeless the worry of finding the right homes in a reasonable time frame.

Vaccinating, Socialising and Training any remaining pups, plus your own then kicks in, and leaves you shattered ;)

Then all the worry of first weeks in new homes then the first 18 months or so (usually 8 months to two years) wondering if you will get that call that the new owners can't cope.

After that you relax a bit until the bombshell that redundancy, marriage break-up bereavement forces Re-homing of 4, 9 etc years old.

Why do we do it we ask ourselves as we look at our latest puppy and start planning which direction we will take our breeding program next, LOL

The food is a porridge consistancy then they all go on mum and leaving a bit of milk down to be lapped.A few were still wretching on and off during the night - but praying to god that stops.
Had you tube on all day with different sounds, was so funny, pups just lay there and adults dogs went mad ! ha ha
Gosh - redundancy, just gone through that, was the first thing i thought 'get rid of dogs?' - ur - no! it was 'no more takeaways, and goodbye Sky plus' !

Brainless -maybe it is the dish of milk then? snorting this up? thought i ought to put one down incase they got thirsty from the porridge ?

I never put separate liquid down this soon, put a shallow dish of clean water down from 4 weeks, never more than an inch at a time.

They will get all the fluid they need from Mums milk at this 'tasting' stage, when the volume of semi solid food is still a small part of their overall intake.
