Topic Dog Boards / Showing / When is a puppy not a puppy?
- By CVL Date 01.04.11 15:30 UTC
Hello,

My boy will be 12 months old on 5th of June.  There's a show on the same day that I would like to enter.  Although many people seem to think you can still enter in puppy classes on the dog's first birthday, I've also been told of things getting nasty when other exhibitors don't agree (despite the entry being accepted by the secretary in the first place)... and also that many show secretaries have differing opinions... am told of dogs in junior being eligible to challenge for Best puppy on their first birthday.  So before I enter, I would like to be sure that it's ok and I'm not going to cause a riot.  Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks,

Clare

just read your other post :-)

You can enter Eddie.. Puppy is puppy until 12months and one day.. puppy is not exceeding 12 months.. therefore.. 1st birthday he is not exceeding 12 months and is still eligible to enter and challenge as a puppy... confirmed by KC :-)

Puppy class is for dogs of 6 months and not more than 12 months on first day of the show. At 12 months exactly on the first day  they are eligible for puppy as they are not more than 12 months. HTH

Thanks both, that is how I would interpret it too.  I was just slightly perturbed because it seems that some exhibitors/judges/stewards would interpret it differently... I don't want to get shouted at, I'm a big wimp!!!

No one should interpret it differently....Not Exceeding means born 12 months exactly before the (first if its a multi day show) date of the show.

So born 2nd April 2010 then still in puppy 2nd April 2011. Next day...out!

Though if your pup is 12 months old on say the first day of a four day show and shown on the last day they could still win Best Puppy at 12 months 3 days of age, as the age always counts to the FIRST DAY OF THE SHOW.

As others have said your dog IS still a puppy on the day of the show, as it is NOT over 12 months on that day....Please dont let others tell you otherwise :)

Sounds like it could be a case of sour grapes Clare.. Go enter Eddie in the puppy class and be proud, he is a lovely boy :-)

I haven't a clue but can never work out why birthdays  aren't considered to be a year and a day on from the original day that you were born on? If you were born on the 1st April then your next birthday on the 1st April must mean you are a year and a day old because you can't have 1st April twice in one year - so 31st March would be the 365th day of the year (forget about leap years :-) ) and 1st April would be the 366th day.

Not querying the show rules as I don't show and have no idea about it at all but it is something I have wondered about with birthdays :-)

Your birth day is day zero.  You become 1 day old on the day after the day on which you were born... Born at 3pm on a Monday - not one day old until 3pm on Tuesday...

On a pups first birthday it becomes aged 1 (12 months), on the anniversary of it's birth day and for the whole day, and becomes 12 months and 1 day the day after.

Does that help? :)

Thank you :-) it's one of those things that is obvious when you think about it but still confuses me. I have a mental block on some things .......... I am usually quite proficient where maths is concerned but think myself into a convoluted muddle at times - says she who ended up drawing metre squares on the wall of the bathroom to work out the number of square metres needed when buying tiles in our first house :-)

Like why does sour cream have a sell-by date, and how can the moon and the sun be visible at the same time?

...or maybe those were just me??!! :)

I can still remember the day I realised the answer to the latter one.  Well slap my forehead and call me stupid - my brother still teases me about that one!
