Topic Dog Boards / Health / 9 month old pup not gaining weight
- By Gema [gb] Date 31.03.11 07:36 UTC
My 9 month old gundog puppy does not seem to have gained any weight in the past 2 / 3 months? She 'looks' just about right, not too thin not to fat but she seems stuck around 20kg - she is extremely high energy, so I guess she could be burning off what she consumes?

The trouble is she is also a bit fussy with her food. I am about to change her over to adult food - she has been on Skinners F & T puppy up until now and am planning on gradually changing over to Skinners F & T Duck & Rice.

She is wormed up to date etc.

Am I worrying unduly or should I get her looked at?

If she is fussy with her food, try throwing in raw chicken wings and other bits of BARF food as well, usually does the trick with fussy eaters.

If she is healthy and full of energy she will be like many adolescents and go through that not putting on weight and looking a bit thin and lanky stage, (unless she is big boned or overfed) vets are very happy with this and if they had their way they would all stay like this permanently a lot of adolescents go this way and a lot of owners worry, but there is no need. :-) They then put on weight again from 2-3 years of age, so no I wouldn't worry at all. :-)

Of course no harm in a vet check if you are worried, but if she is active and going through hormone changes she'll burn up more energy, just like our children do. :-)

I had the weight problem with my show dog, was told by judges he was " too lean " [my breed is weighed prior to showing]despite him being fed a good quality puppy food and trying alternative diets too, eventually put him on RC Sensible, aimed at picky eaters[he isn't one] and has a higher fat content, did the trick,he gained weight but still is on the lean side but very active and bouncy when awake.

Most folk in my breed are worried about their dogs being over weight so he is something unique.

RC Sensible maybe what you need as it is for picky eaters as well as putting on the weight.

On looking at the Skinners website I think I may try her on the Ruff & Ready as it is suitable for older puppies and also fussy eaters..... Excellent price as well!

I had a hard time with my oldest boy when he arrived--he just lost any interest in food and to this day he can't be tempted--but the arrival of another dog at least got him eating his meals properly. I have three now and they all get chicken wings, a complete food, eggs from my hens and tripe (and mini pancakes when they are really in luck :))

Yes - I am planning my next dog now. Looking for a terrier type. Hopefully that will promote some healthier eating!!

as long as he doesn't eat the terrier :)

What's the breeds weight range?  She could be just at the correct weight for her and not go any bigger if she is in the accepted weight range.

Is she a Vizsla?

I have wire boys who grow like weeds and eat with enthusiasm but I know girls in both wire and smooth versions who are much less keen and struggle to get weight on.  What you are describing though sounds pretty normal, they do level off a bit from 7 or 8 months and that might not change til she's had her first season.

A near neighbour has a smooth girl who sounds very much like yours.  I feed my dogs a raw diet and, when she came to me for some food advice, I  suggested she give it a try.  She still feeds some kibble but since she started to add real meat and bones, and since her girl has had a season she's much more keen on her food - still a little light, but certainly doing better. She comes from working lines and when I had a look at her breeders website many of them seemed on the 'fine' side too.  What is your girls background?

Yes she is a Vizsla (smooth), she is quite slight against her mother (who lives with my Mum) but not far off height wise. She is just under the lower weight range for an adult, a little under 18kg which sounds fine and don't get me wrong she looks fine. It is just strange that she hasn't really changed in the last couple of months?

I do think that her first season is imminent, she is showing signs and also her mother first came into season at 9.5 months.

I work her Mother and her grandfather on the dam side is very much a working dog. Her father is a pet (with exceptional temperament & hips) from a showing background (Bournehouse).
Her mother is possibly an exception as a Vizsla in that she will eat anything, you wouldn't think that anything related to her could be so fussy!!

I would like to feed more raw but freezer space etc does not allow right now. She had a handful of the new food last night and loved it which is all good. She is on a weekend away now with my mum & her mum so no doubt as she has competition from other dogs she will scoff anything that is put in front of her!

Hi - my 10 month  vizsla bitch pup (from working lines) is also around 19kg and has been for the past 2 months. Looks great, bit smaller than the others at the moment ( 21-22kg range) here but like your girl not too thin, she's also very active ( going through a particularly nutty stage) but keeping weight on. We are lucky that all of ours eat well . From memory pretty sure the older V's were all nearly at adult size at a similar age. I wouldnt worry :))
