Happy New Year to you all.
Some of you may remember one of my posts regarding Plasma Transfusion for the treatment of Fading Puppy Syndrome.
Well as advised by the forum I did send the article to Our Dogs and Dog World. I think Dog World thought it not worthy to be published but Ourdogs Did publish it in November. Since it appeared in Ourdogs I have had numerous telephone calls stating how interesting they found it, some who were suffering with FPS and asking for further advice.
On Monday I received a very interesting call from a lady who lives in Scotland and breeds Pugs. She was telling me that Pugs can suffer quite alot with their eyes and ulcers are quite common. She herself had a bitch that actually had to have her eye removed due to an ulcer that would not clear up after operations and anti-biotics. She herself later learned of another breeder who had had a dog with a severe eye ulcer and had also received treatment that was not working. This dog however had its own plasma taken and put directly into the affected eye. I think the plasma was used in the same way as you would eye drops. The reult of this was that after a few days the eye had completely healed.
I thought I should post this information as like with FPS not all vets are aware these treatments exist.
Has anyone else heard of this treatment for eye problems?
I suppose if you think logically the antibodies in the plasma are perhaps the best way to fight infection and assist in the healing process.
We may not all have the eye problem of ulcers in our breeds but many of us have either known someone or suffered ourselves some sort of eye injury where it is borderline as to whether the eye is removed due to no response form anti-biotics. Maybe the plasma would there too be worth a try?

Yes it does. When the lady called I knew I should put it on the forum as you never know there could be just one person out here now it could help.
I think the same as you "what else could it be used for?". I also wonder if it could be used for treatment in humans too??? You never know I mean an eye ulcer is surley the same condition in both.

Dear Staffy,
My 2 week old boxer pups were 7 and now 4 due to FPS. Their circumstances including lack of milk production is very similiar to your story. I have forwarded your first posting to my vet who wants more details before using this treatment on my remaining 4. Firstly, does he use clotted blood? How do we contact your vet? Please email me directly, if possible. I know you realise how urgent this is and how distressing so I hope you read my message soon. Your email address is withheld but your phone number is not much use from Australia without knowing which city I am calling. Many thanks in advance. Amanda
