Has anyone else seen this, it made me weep.

That makes me feel sick and brought tears to my eyes, poor poor elephant, i could quite easy swing for people like that.

I am hoping that now the cruelty has been exposed in the press that some sort of animal welfare (RSPCA??) can intervene?

Yes, I read that. Absolutely disgusting I could happily swing for someone like that. You just wish that you could be there to protect her. I really believe the owner should now let her retire. Hope someone can enforce an order for them to relinquish ownership.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 26.03.11 20:41 UTC
Truly horrendous. :-(
- By Jeff (Moderator) Date 26.03.11 20:46 UTC
The RSPCA were informed about this previously and refused to intervene.
- By JeanSW Date 26.03.11 22:56 UTC
I'm sorry, I can't watch the video.

But this has been going on within circus communities in this country for many, many years.  It is common, not unusual.

I have seen videos from some of the top circus names, and the cruelty is so sadistic, and heartbreaking.  Nothing ever gets done about it.
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 27.03.11 01:55 UTC
The RSPCA were informed about this previously and refused to intervene

Why wasn't the person abusing her charged and jailed? That's the thing that makes me really upset--everyone seems to get away with it except the animals they torture. There will always be monsters who abuse other animals and people, but for the RSPCA to say there was "no evidence" of maltreatment is just outrageous. How can they present a public image of caring for animals when they seem to ignore all but the very worst atrocities?
- By mastifflover Date 27.03.11 02:00 UTC
Sick, sick sick. SO disgusting......................

I could only manage to watch just over 1 minute of that video - that was too much to bear, but that poor elephant........ and the other animals there.....they have no choice but to LIVE like that, day, in day out................

How can humans be so different????? Most of us could do no harm to animals, others - like these sick, pathetic, scumbag little...... GRRRRRRRRRR! there is no printable words that can discribe them   These people hurt animals......defensless, chained down animals. They aren't even doing it under the excuse of 'training', it just seems to be the way they are........

Poor, poor animals, I hope they can be saved from that sadistic lot of people and, please, please, please let them experience some happy, peacefull and comfortable days on this earth, safe form fear and pain, please don't let them perish before they know life doesn't have to be like that :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Just looked at Super Circus to see if I could e-mail a comment on their page. There is not a contact except for ordering ticket but read this!

Travelling with our circus are our horses, ponies, dogs, our circus born camel and our magnificent retired Indian Elephant, Anne who has been a part of our family for over fifty years. We are proud of our animal welfare

Someone has suggested a campaign to have her freed. What a good idea.
- By helenmd [gb] Date 27.03.11 09:25 UTC
There is a petition you can sign http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/free-annie-the-asian-elephant/

Have just signed, many thanks.

Thanks for the link. I have signed and passed it on to friends.
- By Celli [gb] Date 27.03.11 11:20 UTC
Disgusting, awful to think the RSPCA could have acted sooner, one of the many reason's I'd never donate to them, if there'd been a film crew for them to pose in front of they'd have been there in a shot.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 27.03.11 16:48 UTC
Police are now of course involved, pity it's taken so long!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 27.03.11 18:26 UTC
Thanks, have signed petition.

When this circus was in a town near us recently there were a small group of people protesting about this poor elephant's treatment.
I hope she gets a nice place to retire to.
- By snowflake [gb] Date 27.03.11 21:42 UTC
Just dreadful.  On the news tonight I heard that the owner is "considering" sending her to a sanctuary at last. However surely that would entail an arduous journey for the poor elephant?  I do hope this has a happy outcome.

- By chaumsong Date 28.03.11 00:47 UTC
I haven't seen the article, but I hope it's the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee? It may be a long journey, but she ahs spent her life cooped up travelling, and it would be wonderful when she got there :-)
- By Anndee [gb] Date 28.03.11 16:57 UTC
Disgusting!! People like that should be strung up! I have signed the petition and also sent a plea to my MP. Lets hope something is done soon for this beautiful animal and all the others suffering under these cruel ba****ds hands!!!
I like to confront him with a pitch fork. See how he would like it. i know I'd enjoy it!!!!
I despise the treatment of animals like this. The poor animal hadn't a hope in hell of moving away for him, if that is what he wanted her to do. Its totally barbaric. No need for it all

signed and forwarded to my FB friends and family.

I cant put here what I really want to say...Id be booted off!!!
- By Anndee [gb] Date 29.03.11 10:26 UTC
I know exactly what you mean. Just read on Daily Mail site that there may well be hope for her. Whipsnade zoo are happy to look after her and Roberts may be relenting to let her go. Also Brian Blessed is on board for her rescue. Lets hope that the same can be done for the rest of the poor animals. wheres the bl***y RSPCA when they are really needed??!!
- By Snoringbear [gb] Date 29.03.11 11:43 UTC
I drove by this circus at the weekend and my immediate thought was wondering what kind of horrific animal abuse went on there. Looks like I was right :(
- By Lea Date 29.03.11 11:50 UTC
heard on gmtv this morning that whipsnade zoo half offered to take her to join their herd!
lea :)
- By Anndee [gb] Date 29.03.11 11:58 UTC
How can somewhere HALF make an offer??? Either they have or they haven't!!!
I hope they make the whole offer and take her
- By Lea Date 29.03.11 12:07 UTC
sorry that should have read have made an offer! predictive texting at its best! lol
lea :)
- By Anndee [gb] Date 29.03.11 12:25 UTC
Oh. That makes much more sense :O)
How can you do predictive texting on CD???
I'm only just learning to do it on my mobile, didn't know you can do it on computers. x
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 29.03.11 12:27 UTC
Only if you're posting via your mobile. :-)
- By Anndee [gb] Date 29.03.11 13:43 UTC
Aaah I see. Can't connect to internet via mobile.
- By Lacy Date 29.03.11 16:19 UTC
Lea. It would be great if Whipsnade could take her, I wonder how an elephant of that age having been on her own for so many years would adapt to a herd. Fingers and paws crossed for her.
- By Lea Date 29.03.11 17:03 UTC
Yes, sorry I was on my mobile on my lunch break!!!!
Lea :)
- By LJS Date 29.03.11 17:25 UTC
I wonder how she will be in a new environment as I am sure she will have issues about trusting humans and could potentially be a danger to the keepers and other elephants. Not her fault poor girl but something that should be considered .
- By JeanSW Date 30.03.11 22:32 UTC
There is talk of her being taken to Longleat.

At least she would get correct veterinary care if that's the case.
- By Carrington Date 31.03.11 07:57 UTC
I hope that she does go to Longleat, poor old girl, they don't seem to think a herd would do her much good at her age, at least there are experts properly discussing what is best for her.  I didn't even realise that there were still circuses with animals in them, I thought they had been phased out years ago.

The other animals in that circus didn't appear to be faring much better than Anne either,  hope they all get homed.

Hope this link works

It is truly good news for this lovely old girl. I hope something good will happen to the rest of the animals in that circus as ther miniature ponies seemd to be getting a bit of a rough deal as well. Hopefully my tears will stop welling up now everytime I think of her :O)

Latest update on Anne.
Its all looking good for the old gal :oD
I am definately going to go and see her when she is settled in.
- By Carrington Date 01.04.11 11:35 UTC
Fabulous news. :-)  I too must pop over to see her there, she's going to have a brilliant life there, I bet she won't believe her luck.
- By Lacy Date 01.04.11 20:47 UTC

> Fabulous news. :-)

It is, but the sad weary look in her eye still makes me weep and how has she has been allowed to live with such cripppling arthritis with little if any veterinary attention. She has been retired for some years, so has she been shackled and living in a barn since or has she been shackled for all of her life?.  I would so like to give the owners a little of their own treatment. If you do go and see her let us now how she is.
- By Anndee [gb] Date 04.04.11 09:55 UTC
Up to the minute news on Anne. She got moved yesterday :oD

Happy Days!!
- By JeanSW Date 04.04.11 11:15 UTC
Wish they had posted a photo of her in her new habitat.

As soon as I heard the whisper that it may be Longleat, I knew that she would at least get proper veterinary attention.  Bless her, it's such a sad state to know how confined her life has been, let alone the direct cruelty.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 04.04.11 12:25 UTC
Great news! I'd love to see a pic too! :-)
- By Anndee [gb] Date 04.04.11 13:36 UTC
Yeah that would have been nice.
I will keep checking on the longleat site and if they put one on I'll pop it on here :o)

- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 04.04.11 17:33 UTC
That's such good news. Safe at last, poor old soul.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 04.04.11 18:27 UTC
Thanks Kenya! I hope when she's settled we get some pics of her enjoying all that open space!
- By Anndee [gb] Date 05.04.11 08:47 UTC
Beautiful pictures of the old lady
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1373415/A-day-Anne-elephant-forget-retirement-begins-Longleat.html
- By Lacy Date 05.04.11 09:37 UTC
Thank you. What a wonderful outcome. Hard to imagine that she has been kept in those conditions for 54 years but her eyes are begining to shine again. Haven't been to Longleat since a child but would like to go just to see her.
- By Anndee [gb] Date 05.04.11 10:11 UTC
I also thought her eyes were looking brighter :O)
I do hope they are going to do an 'Animal Park' programme around her and her rescue.
Why don't we get in touch with BBC/Animal Park and put in a request to do just that?
