Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / outdoor pup toilet area
- By rabid [gb] Date 29.03.11 09:00 UTC
Our yard is decked over with a wooden deck at the moment.  When we have pups, we want them to encourage them to start toileting out there if possible - but the deck isn't ideal because puppy poop will easily get stuck between each board and the wood will absorb wee too - it will be hard to keep clean.  We are wondering if there is something we can put down on the deck, instead??  (Or on one area of the deck, as a toilet place.)

As our inside toilet area, we plan to use the idea someone on here had, of using grow trays and horse bedding.  I did think about using that in the outdoor area too, but I think it would just blow everywhere in the wind.

The other idea we had was to turf a small area - but we're not sure how long turf lasts or if it will last anything like 7 wks, if laid on a deck.

Does anyone else have any other ideas or know if the turf thing would work?

Thanks.

Maybe you could order some astro turf , if you can find a way of making it secure .... My garden is slabbed and i have 3 areas of astro turf which my dogs have used with no problems for about 5 years now .

Will the dogs toilet on astro turf if they're not used to it?  Because I'd also like to use this area with the bitch when whelping, and she's not used to toileting on astro turf - that was why I thought the 'proper' turf would be a better idea, as she'd most likely go then.  Is the astro turf difficult to clean, in terms of poops on it?  (Don't the bristles get difficult-to-remove poop on them?  Sorry if TMI!).

No its easy to jet wash , thats what i do .
We used to have turf but the dogs just ruined it so we took it all up and they went straight to using the astro turf , the dogs really  were not bothered by it at all , and it really is so easy to clean just go for a short pile astro turf. :0)
