I am fostering a couple of JRT pups. 10 weeks old. they have very good appetites and seem healthy but when they eat their stomachs really blow up making them look pot bellied. They ahve been wormed with Panacur. Just wondered if anyone had any other ideas why they would look so pot bellied.

My little terrier when a pup used to turn into a barrel after eating. At first I was concerned and many worrying thoughts went through my mind, but she deflated as the food digested and didn't seem bothered at all. As in all cases if you are very concerned then a word with the vet would be an idea, but this is something my pup outgrew.

You may be feeding them too much per meal.

How many times a day are they being fed? Perhaps they need smaller meals more frequently?
I am feeding them 4 times/day. only about a tablespoon of food, It doesn't look much but I am used to much bigger dogs. #They eat it really quickly and the look for more.

Which means that you are not giving them enough.
My Chi's eat more than that 4 times a day at the same age.
I have been a bit worried to give them any more as their stomachs get so big. they really look very distended. on the odd occasion I have given them more they just keep going until the food is gone. They don't seem to stop like my BCs do.
They weigh 4.5lb and 3.5 lb. maybe I should weigh their food to make sure I am giving them enough. How much would you suggest for dogs that weight? Thanks.

When were they last wormed, and how often in total?
not sure when they were wormed before I got them (possibly not much if at all) but I have given them a 3 day course of panacure last Friday/Sat/Sun and will repeat it in 14 days

At this age, I feed to appetite.
At this age, I feed to appetite.I agree, I fed to appetite and worried that I was overfeeding because she barrelled out each time, but my vet assured me that she was fine so I ignored the pot belly. She outgrew it and is a normal size now with a perfect weight.
