Hallo, everyone. My dogs are raw fed,and Ive suddenly got a freezer load of liver(it seems)I ordered some,I was given some, and a mistake on my latest order, sent me liver chunks instead of the heart chunks I ordered!I know you are not supposed to feed a lot of liver, too much vitamin a,I believe?Could anyone tell me what are safe levels, please? One of my collies is 4months old,and Jess is an adult. Thanks in advance!- -Also,what do other people do with the huge polystyrene boxes some meat orders come in?

I split a 500g pack of liver (I usually buy it from the supermarket) between my 3 dogs mixed in with their other mince, they have this 2-3 times a week, I dont know how right or wrong that is but my boys seem ok on it. You could always make some liver cake :)

There's your answer :) can be frozen too - maybe some of your dog owning friends would buy it!

I've seen these listed on Freecycle and they seem quite popular

The folk on the DAF forum say about 1 oz liver per dog per day. I think that's about 30g? I'm guessing that's for an average sized dog.
thanks everybody, why didnt I think of liver cake, excellent for training, and Ive nearly ran out, too,AND its Gwens first puppy class tonight!with that and the 1oz rule,I might soon have my freezer back!Thankyou!

I don't get meat delivered, but have you asked the company if they would like the boxes back to use again? Then you only need to leave out the empties when they next deliver.
Colliepam where do you get your liver from? Also do they sell any other types of meat?
Also is it sent to you raw or cooked?
Ihad some from landywoods, who have a minimum order of £30 ,some from raw to go,who dont have a minimum order but delivery is about £9,I think, and some from Albion meat products who also dont have a minimum order,They all sell different types of meat, and its all raw, minced or chunked, and frozen.I have loads of stuff in the freezer, think ive got a hoarding problem, heheh!I made liver cake, still got loads to shift, still, itl keep!Oh a friend happened(?) to get a whole liver from the butcher, gave me half for the dogs!coals to newcastle!Good luck with the meat!
Thanks Colliepam.
How do they pack the meat so it stays frozen?
Is the frozen meat just packed in a polystyrene box?
Is that enough to keep it frozen & do they send it by post?
Or do they use their own delivery van? I live near Bournemouth!
I'm a bit concerned that the frozen meat would defrost before i could put it in my freezer. Does that happen?
Hi,landywoods deliver in cardboard trays and polythene sacks,I assume the delivery vans are refrigerated,as my delivery is always frozen solid, the other two in the polystyrene boxes, and thats always frozen solid too!You could always email them to see if they deliver in your area, and if you have any worries.Or is there a big petfood warehouse like pets at home near you?I believe they sell frozen mince. Some smaller petshops do,too.

I use Albion Meats. Quite often they deliver about lunchtime and everything is still frozen. They are coming from the midlands to the south-east. They use cardboard boxes and the only problem we've encountered is when the chicken carcasses seem to be bursting out of the box (seems to be quite often) and spill all over the garden as we carry them to the freezer! Still frozen solid though.

I'm a bit concerned that the frozen meat would defrost before i could put it in my freezer. Does that happen? That does happen to my delivery sometimes in the summer months but I just stick it in the freezer and refreeze it - a dog's digestive system is different to ours and will cope with it. I have done this for years and it has never caused a problem - if my dog can find and eat the most revolting carcasses that have obviously been dead for a while a bit of refreezing should be fine :-)
If I am giving them a large recreational bone to chew on it comes out of the freezer still frozen and after an hour or so of chewing it goes back into it again inside a carrier bag ready to be reissued on another day.
