Topic Dog Boards / Health / When can puppy go out?

How long after the second vaccines can puppies mix with other dogs? I have been given such a lot of different information. Puppy had 2nd Nobivac vaccine 9 days ago.

Thanks.

My vets advice was 7-10 days.  We avoided all high traffic dog areas for 10 days but had allowed paws on the floor before that with trips to dog-free areas (more watching than walking).

You do need to be sensible, but it's important for pups to see the world too.  My dog trainng classes will accept vaccinated puppies after their first injection so they get to meet a few pups in a carefully controlled situation

A lot depends on the amount of disease currently in your area. 14 days is the usual manufacturer's recommendation. Of course this doesn't mean you can't carry on with the socialisation, by carrying the puppy everywhere to get used to the sights and sounds and smells of the outside world!

Thanks for your responses.

We have socialised a lot and carried etc, even borrowed a puppy buggy and used that quite a few times (too big to carry now). It's just the fact that different vets have told us different things and I would much rather be out with puppy on a lead than in the buggy!

The datasheet for Nobivac DHP (I'm not sure what brand your puppy has been given) says " Dogs should not be exposed to unnecessary risk of infection within the first 2 weeks after completion of the vaccination regimen."

Thanks Jeangenie, I was looking for that info and couldn't find it. It was the Nobivac vaccine.

Here's the full datasheet with all the information. (Click where it says Previous or Next for other pages).

Thanks for the full data sheet, I read this:

Specific claims
Onset of immunity: one week after vaccination.
Duration of immunity: three years.

which surely claims it is valid 7 days after administration?

Personally, I take mine out 1 week after 1st jab.  Never contracted anything and live in an urban environment.

>Onset of immunity: one week after vaccination.

I understand that as meaning that there are measurable immune levels after 7 days, but not yet full immunity. That would come 14 days after the second vaccination (if the first vax was at about 8 weeks), so 28 days from the first.

I agree with Jeangenie's interpretation.  My own vet uses Nobivac too.

He is always adamant about waiting for 14 days after the last jab.  Any objections are always met with horror stories!

I am lucky in as much as my breed is easy to carry round.  And, being small, I can take them to the coast, and put them outside to meet folk on the caravan site.

I use a 5ft diameter kids swimming pool.  So easy to disinfect after.  I always have a weeks holiday with a litter, as, not having kids myself, I can get them handled by youngsters, under supervision.

You only have another 5 days to wait!  :-)

Thanks everyone.

This all started because before I had the vaccinations done I phoned a couple of vets to find out their prices and protocols. The answers differed and both were using same vaccine make.

My usual vet: one week (nurse said over phone)
Another vet: 7-10 days (how can it be variable???)

When I went to my vet to have the vaccinations done, the vet said two weeks. I told him I had been told differently over the phone and he said he would look in to it etc etc. He also said I would probably be alright after one week. It appears there is no definitive recommendation.

I've owned dogs for over 25 years and the protocol has always been different each time I have had a new puppy, hence my initial query. If this is confusing for me (and I'm not stupid) how confusing must it be for a first time puppy owner?

Have always taken mine out 7 days afterwards.
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 28.03.11 09:26 UTC
Always taken mine the day after, never any problems.  Think its the same vac's.

Take mine out on the ground 1 week after 1st jabs.  But I carry them everywhere before then, I don't keep them shut up at home.
