I have some strawberry plants that were in pots as we were moving. I had them in pots over the winter and they are a bit sorry looking but have a few green sprouts. As the sun was shining nicely today I took some of them out of pots and planted them into the ground. It will be touch and go for a while and I am not entirely confident they will all survive.....

Is there a particular fertilizer I can use on them to give a helping hand? I have miracle grow stuff but I think that is geared more to foliage plants rather than fruiting ones...The plants are coming two years so I would like to give them whatever I can to ensure a good berry production.

They will be fine and you can buy fertiliser for fruit specific plants although miracle grow slow release fertiliser will also be fine :-)

I use well rotted dung! ;)

Off to B&Q or the Garden Centre on Monday then for a bag of poo....had some to put round the rhubarb....but they ate it all...:-)

Do you not know anyone with horses - they'd only be too happy for you to relieve them of some of their dung heap....

The only problem I have found with well rotted dung is that there are three willing rotten dung disposal units living with us ! :-D

It is on the ground and anything above that a lab can reach which we have a problem with ! We didn't get a look in for any Strawberries, outside tomatoes, cucumbers,lettuces, cabbages....... the list goes on !

We are putting our thinking caps on for this year to see how we can stop the little veggies thieves !

Don't bother with raised beds, our two just prop themselves up on their front legs and walk alongside picking out their favourites.

We have a big garden both back and front and have various areas where we grow fruit and veg. Luckily the main veg patch is secure off buy a gate but the gate is only as good as it can be when people close it after they have gone to water everything ! It only takes a few minutes and it looks like a pague of locusts have decended !!

The other main area is also secured off in some way but again the five bar gate is opened and closed at various times and so keeping an eye on the locusts when this happens proves to be a problem !

We then have various plants that we plant out in all the beds in both the main area back and front which they have free access to all the time so they normally get eaten once they start to produce. I do try and hide the plants amongst the normal non veg plants but they are very clever at sniffing them out !!

I suppose it serves me right feeding them on a raw diet as it must be like self service to them !!
