Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Small pup, should I top him up.

Hi.

One of our pups is 100g lighter than the rest. I Try get him on the best tests but he always seems to get pushed off. He was the smallest born. He's not crying or starving at all but I'm just a little concerned he's not gaining like the others are. O and they are a toy breed.

Should I top him up or just leave him be. They will be 2 weeks tomorrow.

Thanks in advance x

I would remove the other pups whilst he feeds so they can't push him off, weigh him before and after a feed to see if he is taking milk on board.

Sometimes you get a smaller one but provided they are behaving normally and gaining weight in line with their size then I wouldn't worry.

They are due to be wormed and if overloaded they can interfere with appetite and weight gain.

I would keep my hands around him to protect him while he's feeding.  And I'd plug him in while the others were sleeping too.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try putting him on on his own. He's gaining weight everyday and seems quite content but obviously him being alot smaller than the others is concerning me a bit. I really don't want to interfear with mums milk supply either. I'll worm them tomorrow.

Ill see how we go over the next couple of days. Thanks again x

Isabella I had a small one in my last litter till i started to wean them then he soon caught up when he went to his new home he was the same weight has the others. I have a toy breed too. As long has he is putting on weight and content he should be fine.

Thanks everyone.

I'm hoping he will catch up a bit when he starts to be weaned. I'm a worrier and I just want to see him thrive!!

He was the first born and also the smallest, I know you shouldn't have favourites but he's pick of the litter and the one I shall be keeping if he keeps looking the way he does so far. I've got quite attached xx
