Hi,
My pups are eight days old and mum has rarely done any toileting sometimes she will clean pee but poo is no go.
I have been toileting them constantly but since last night one seems to have a very swollen tummy,he is still feeding
well and loads of pee when toileting but no poo. I have rubbed his tummy and his bottom with a warm cloth but nothing.
he seems to be straining when i am rubbing but nothing coming, his anus looks almost tight and closed in comparison to the
others. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do to help my wee guy I am getting worried now.x

boiled cooled water if that doesnt  do it ask the vet for some lactulose .

Puppies usually become constipated with lack of fluids.

12oz just now.x

Hi Kane
Glad to hear he's done his business LOL

I had a similar problem with one pup and as strange as it sounds he hated to poo in the whelping box.  It was a smaller box than I normally use so perhaps that had something to do with it.  He would go round and round the box obviously uncomfortable but wouldn't go.  Like you I presumed he was constipated and spent ages trying to toilet him myself. Eventually he would go but it was always a worry.  As soon as I started to put them out on the grass for a few minutes of sun at around 10 days, I noticed he would poo every time. If weather doesn't permit perhaps just removing him from the box onto a mat on the floor might do the trick.

Maybe worth a try if the problem persists.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies the boiled water helped. His little tummy seemed a little swollen today
so vet advised what dose of lactulose and it's work a treat he is much more settled.
I am sorry but he can't toilet  himself anyway and would not dream of putting an eight day old pup out in
garden where my other dogs go and possibly stray cats not to mention slugs etc think that would be asking for infection.
He will be staying in my room in his whelping box beside mum.x x Sorry maybe person who suggested this thought it read eight weeks old, surely nobody would put a newborn pup outdoors on grass.x
