Topic Dog Boards / Health / cod liver oil capsules doseage?
- By saga Date 22.03.11 18:26 UTC
Hi I have a 9 year old Gsp bitch. She is already on Dorwest Glucosamine & chondrotin sulphate (as suggested by vet) I am wondering whether to give her an additional supplement in the form of cod liver oil capsules. She is 37 kg & I wondered if anyone can suggest which (brand)tablets to give her & what doseage?
Thanks Liz

My Mastiff has elbow displasia and the vet recomeneded I give him cod-liver oil capsules every day along with his glucosamine suppliments too (I allready do anyway though).

I used to give my last dog a cod liver oil capsule every day (he was approx 35kg), he had the 'human' sort, 'Severn Seas', he'd have 1 capsule per day. I don't think you can over-dose them on cod-liver oil :)

I heard you shouldn't give cod liver oil as it contains too much Vitamin A, but that a good alternative is salmon oil or plain fish oil, not liver oil.  Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Both myself and the OP have been advised by our vets to give our dogs cod liver oil, I trust my dogs vet and an sure he would not suggest giving something to my dog that would harm him :)

Just found an article regarding toxicity of vitamin A.

It comes to the conclusion : "Cod liver oil (which is a traditional source of vitamins A and D) contains 600 IU per g (of vitamin A)- which means you have to get the dog to drink a large cup per day of it in order to achieve any poisoning...

No problem :)
As with any suppliments however, if you are unsure or if your dog is on any medication, it's always better to err on the side of caution and check with the vet first :)
