Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy with broken canines!!
- By king of bling Date 22.03.11 11:15 UTC
Hi Guys,
one of my pups has broken both her canines. Both are fractured in half length ways and one is like a little stump!! She is 10 1/2 weeks old. We are seeing the vet this afternoon as I feel she may have to have whats left removed. Has anyone ever experienced this??
Thanks

This happened to one of the pups in my litter once, don't know if he'd got a little bit over excited whilst playing!!

It was actually the vet that noticed when they went to their check up - told me not to worry and it should still just fall out as normal. I informed the new family and said I would pay if there was any vet treatment needed if the tooth didn't fall out by itself when the new teeth came through. it was never mentioned again and the pup is 18 months old now so I'm guessing there was never a problem! :-)

MKy BC has worn his canines and has flat tips. The CS has fantastic big canines both chew stuff any idea why?

I don't know - I suppose they would be the same as humans though ie some have naturally better teeth than others?

A dog of mine practically wore ALL her front teeth down to little stubs but she was never in any pain and never needed any dental treatment and she didn't even chew all that much. Don't get me wrong, she liked to chomp a bone as much as the rest of us (:-) ) but nothing excessive. Bizarre.

Just an quick update..took her to see out vet last night and he is consulting his friend who specializes in animal dentristry. He gave her an antibiotic injection and a liquid painkiller to be given each day. He said it could go eilther way. If we leave whats left of the canines in they could come out by themselves but ut there is a risk of infection setting in as the pulp of the teeth are exposed and they could damge the new teeth below plus it must be very painful for her. We are also considering having them surgically removed but there is a small chance that the new teeth may be damaged in the process of extracting the old ones.  :(
