I have to say i'm mightly impressed with my vets.

Just about 7-8 months ago now I asked about this and they'd never used it. They ordered some and I had to pay for both implants as they come in packs of 2, that was fine as I needed 2. The cost - yeah well it was a lot.

Anyway took my Kai in a few weeks ago to have the implant again(A little late in doing so) and to my surprise I only had to pay for 1 and it was only £30!!! :-D Me, I was so chuffed.. The vets explained that they use it so often now they can charge the small amount. They have found it has worked wonders on so many dogs - - - Aren't they glad that I requested that all those months ago ;-)

They were so up on it all that they discussed the usages on bitches, which hasn't been authorised as yet, but clearly they've been doing their homework or being going to seminars - ruddy brilliant!!! Well done my vets!!!

Ahhh gee thanks... And to think that the behaviour of the dogs in my area is improving no end too ;-)....
It also does what it was started for and that was to stop the dog getting OTT with bitches, it does with my boy..

A friend of mine used the suprelorin implant on her Lab, and it ended up with him completely changing temperament, with fear aggressive type symptoms.  They operated to remove the implants, but found that after two weeks it turns into a jelly like substance that can't be removed, so she's had to wait for it to simply wear off.  Thankfully, he's reverted back to his normal happy go lucky self, but she won't ever consider using suprelorin or anything similar in the future after her experiences.

I'm glad it's worked for your boys, but the can have serious effects so just thought it was worth posting the experience from someone who didn't find them quite so 'super'.

Oh no :-( Sorry to hear that, glad that he returned to normal. I tried it on one dog and it had no reaction to him what so ever, nothing at all..

So to anyone reading this, Suprelorin may not always have the desired effects on the dog, it may have an effect, it may not, there will always be a risk, as there is with any medication.

I know that they are doing a trial with this on bitches and they then remove the implant after 2 weeks, but then clearly there is a concern that in your friends boy that within 2 weeks it can turn to jelly, therefore negating the reason for using it on a bitch in the first place, hmmm.

Just thought I'd shed a bitof light on the subject in regards to post treatment aggression in male dogs. The Suprelorin actually stimulates testosterone levels at first and then after approx 3-6 weeks the levels drop.
I'm sure your friend would have found if they had waited a couple of weeks the behaviour would have improved as the testosterone levels decreased.
