Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Which scissors for golden retriever?
- By tiegold [gb] Date 21.03.11 10:51 UTC
Im looking at buying some new trimming scissors for my Golden Retrievers to trim for show.
I really don't have a clue where I should be looking or what I should be looking for so would really appreciate your help.

Where would you recommend to buy them from?
What types of scissors and sizes etc. do I need?
Would I be best with a small pair and large pair of straight scissors and a pair of thinners with one blade of teeth or with two blades of teeth...or a pair of each?
I have had a look on ebay and there seems to be a pretty decent professional dog groomers shop on there that have some good deals on scissors but really dont want to buy something that would be no use to me

Any help would be great
Thanks
Amy

Not sure what type of scissors you would need for a goldie, but I like Roseline ones.  Scissors tho are a very personal choice and much prefer to use my own than anyone elses if i'm giving them a hand to finish off a bit of trimming at a show!

I've several pairs and my favourite are my curved small scissors.  I also have a pair of straights and a pair of single sided thinners.

I'm sure someone else will be along soon that can steer you in the right direction as to what types you need for a goldie.

Jill

PS I've got Gordons

ETA: Might be worth speaking to your breeder who might be able to show you what to do!

I have a golden and use Gota 65 thinning scissors that have one blade of teeth, and a pair of 5" Roseline straight scissors.

Thanks Jill and goldiemad, very helpful :-)

Jill, my breeder lives many hours away but one of my mentors is a lady I used to work for, I used her stud dog this time and she is starting up a trimking course for my breed soon, hopefully this will help me a lot. I have no problems trimming until I come to the neck, chest and shoulders....most of the dog then lol.

Again thankyou

Diamond Edge have some good scissors. I prefer to use single sided thinning scissors for some parts of the dog, double sided for the neck etc and then obviously large straight scissors for the tail. There is a really good trimming DVD by someone in the breed. PM me if you want the name.

On my Goldens I used straight edged scissors from diamond edge and double sided thinners, also diamond edge. I have had them over 20 years now and still using them, had them sharpened a few times. The thinners need to have the blades not too thick as it takes the hair out and shows the cut marks. Good luck.

I would advise getting a grooming table - I never did with my Goldens but always remember back ache. Then I got a medium sized breed and a grooming table and wished I'd done it so much sooner.
