Topic Dog Boards / Health / Mouth ulcers and peeing a lot

My 5 year old Golden has recently developed an Immune mediated blood disorder, Thrombocytapenia(Low platelets / blood clotting) and is on a high dose of steroids. He is also Epileptic and on Gabapentin and Epiphen.
As a result of his meds and his condition he has large sore looking ulcers on the inside of his lips at the front of his mouth which make it difficult to eat. The vet advised against Bonjela and gave him another dose of antibiotics. I have been bathing them with salt water and have also been told to try ice cubes. Has anyone got any other ideas for my poor lad??

He also is drinking a lot more water which makes him wee more. He was wetting himself at night so we reduced the water as much as we could given his excess thirst. Now he has at least started to ask to go out but it can be anything from an hour apart like last night to 3 to 4 hours between wanting to go out. He can at least go to sleep during the day to catch up but we cannot so I would be pleased to get any advise on how we can "control" this if atall possible.

Sorry I can't think of anything better than Bonjela for the mouth ulcers but you could fit a dog door so he can go out during the night when he needs to relieve himself.  I would cordon off a small area outside the dog door so he doesn't go wandering off too far during the night.

Unfortunately our doors are glass all the way down!
I would like to leave a door open even but not where we live it is not safe enough.......not becuase he would wander off but it is who would wander IN!!

Hi Lyn

How about bathing Pepper's lips with a colloidal silver solution? It could also go in his drinking water, but I'd check with your vet to make sure it doesn't interfere with his medication. This where I get mine from http://www.aquasafepfw.co.uk/

I hope he perks up soon

Hi Karen

Thanks. I will look into it and wing off an email to the specialist to check re. his current meds. Poor lad is really suffering and its heartbreaking when you dont know what to do to help ease it. He is beginning to perk up now the steroids have been reduced a bit and the Epiphen is settling into his system.

See you Thursday. Pepper is going to just do half an hour in the earlier class so he can take it easy. Burt will be in the later class......which could be entertaining!?

Would a new door be a possibility if it's a long term problem?

You won't see us for a few weeks, Esme is in season!

You may find the excessive peeing will reduce if the steroid dosage has dropped. When Winnie was having chemo, and a high steroid dose, I had to get up during the night and she'd occasionally wet the bed without realising. Once the steroids reduced so did the peeing.
