Hi

Me again we have been sitting tight for some time now I think poor girl has been in phase 1 for a few days. Her second tie was 9 weeks yesterday and 9 weeks last thursday for the first.

I did get her checked by the vets yesterday as there was some trembling but he though she was in great health etc no blockages and felt dogs reaction to contractions.

I have been up all nigh with her as usaul but not slept much as has been a lot more intense our poor girls hasnt really slept been gigging walking around in whelping bed etc. I have just checked her underneath and looks like her waters have broken but she doesnt appear to be pushing yet. water is warm clear fluid is this normal when should she be pushing will it be obvious??

Panic

Ring the Vet to be on standby (don't forget to ring them when she ahs finished too).

If nothing within two hours would seek the vets attention, unless there is bright green discharge (a sign of placental detachment).

Take her out on lead in the garden and walk her around, this often will move a pup along, so take a towel with you, I have had more than one born into my hands outside.

Wow hi first one out it was a boy black and white similer markings feet and tail first helped ease head out at very end when she pushed. He went for the teat was quit for a bout 3 minutes now he doesnt shut up except when hes got a good grip of the nipple.

sounds good so far thats our first ever pup. Were hoping for a bitch at some point as we are keeping one. any way got to go ill update as we go

p.s. Boy 300grams mum non pregnant weighs 14.5kg is that a good weight for pup??

Umbilical cord hasnt been chewed off down to pup assume will all come of naturaly at some point?

OK think shes going to starting pushing again shes fidgeting we move pup so doesnt get in advertantly injured but mum doest like this even though pup in whelp area with mum any tips dont want her treading all over pup while pushing as she sits up and all sorts when pushing out?
- By Isabella [gb] Date 20.03.11 09:01 UTC
Hope everythings going ok. My bitch wouldn't let me move pups out her way, she kept picking them back up. I just stayed very close and moved pup a bit when ever it was getting in the way but still kept it close. I didn't want to stress her out anymore than she already was.

Good luck

Normal for bitches to leave a couple of inches of cord (we have large gundogs) this will shrivel up after few hours and drop off after a day or so.

Help please

Second pup here but she is breathing with her mouth each time she inhales any suggestions?
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 20.03.11 10:34 UTC
Hope alls well, as no more posts.

My girl wouldn't let pup out of her sight either, same as Isablle, kept moving pup.  Mum was good at avoiding pup though.

You girl did well to push a pup that size out, mine were about 500gs under that and that big for the breed.  Sounds like you have a similar breed to me.
- By Zajak [gb] Date 20.03.11 11:17 UTC
What do you mean by the pup inhales through her mouth?  Glad you have a girlie!
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 20.03.11 11:34 UTC
Wow after number 2 quite a wait checked her again and another forwards this time half out delivered pup then fourth less than 5 minutes.

Breathing on pup 2 female was like nose blocked spoke to vet he advised they have small nasal gaps so probably mucus or something. Pup now breaths through nose as well as mouth.

They are all vocal and make noise bexcept for the first boy who is always talking. Hes not screaming just very vocal even when feeding.

any tips please on ensuring where possible all pups progress well.

Panting again not sure if no.5 or placenta etc

Have you read the Book Of The Bitch?
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 20.03.11 14:20 UTC
How are things going?

You need to "swing" the puppy who has secretions too low down to reach with a sucker, put the pup between the palms of you hands with head well supported with your fingers and swing with head down between your legs in a quick smooth motion, repeat a few times till the breathing is less laboured and noisy.

How many pups are you expecting?
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 20.03.11 14:24 UTC
Hi yep twice thta why vet called when second pup was at about 1.50 hours and primed them. He was going to come to our at three hours but as the pup cam eout left it. I had to rub them with a towel and snap some of there cords so could be presented to mum and feed.

All done probably and cleaned up mum with pups. They all seem to be doing well except for one the second birth Bitch, the one who took 2.50mins to come she wont feed and behaves differently to all the others, I dont have high hopes for this pup but will see if it feeds then get to vets in the morning. maybe related to prolonged birth?

Have any of you guys had a issue with birth then a not quite correct pup?

All the rest seem fine and the births were in the correct times
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 20.03.11 14:24 UTC
Sorry she has now had 5 3 girls 2 boys.
- By kane [nl] Date 20.03.11 14:53 UTC
You need to follow Rhodachs advice and swing pup to try ang get any mucous etc out, then put pup to teat and keep
trying to get her to latch on to mum, sometimes one just needs a little more coaxing than the others stick with it.
Jean asked if you had book of the bitch,if not I suggest you get one it's been like a bible to me over the years along wth my mentors.
Well done it's a very stressful time and there are lots of people on here with wonderful advice.
Congratulations and good luck.x

I had this, did as suggested and it worked, she cleared fairly quickly.  I was worried about it getting on her lungs.  She's thriving so far, so have faith in her.

Have you got any nutridrops, if you have start giving it to her, if not get some.  Sounds like you did well, it facinating isn't it.  Can enjoy it later in the day.  Rub a drop of brandy on roof of mouth or tongue to get pup a kick start.  Will keep her in my thoughts for a speedy recovery.  xx

Make sure she's completely warm.

Any update ? all OK I hope ? x
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 20.03.11 18:00 UTC
Just to mention with breech delivery as soon as the chest comes out and the pressure is released on it then fluids will be sucked into the pup whilst the head is still inside so those pups need particular attention after birth re draining those secretions ASAP because with each breath they go deeper down.

Hopefully this pup is just in shock and with TLC will come around. Agree vetdrops/nutridrops work wonders at boosting the energy of Mum and pups with just a few drops at a time.

Did all afterbirths come out / 6 pups = 6 afterbirths ? worth getting an oxytocin jab to be on the safe side to protect Mum x
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 20.03.11 19:38 UTC
no 6 arrived after oxytocin jab from vet, so hopefully alls well with mum.
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 20.03.11 19:58 UTC
BOTB we do have and I have used it read it well before due date. I had to feather at one point and it advised time limits when to call vets etc was priceless saved a pup as we got him out to give oxy jab and it worked.
