Can anyone please suggest anything I can put on my poor girls nipples the puppies are now 3.5 weeks old and she looks quite sore and I feel so sorry for her. So I would be very grateful. Thanks Jenny

I use an old pillow case or t-shirt with holes cut out for the nipples when mums have to feed the pups, taking it off when they are away from them. It sounds daft but does help stop the scratching.

Do you clip the puppies nails every few days? That helps. Also if you go to a chemist and ask for a tube of lanolin for nursing mothers (breasts) it canb be safely used for bitches too, I think it's called Lanocare or somethiong like that, it's just lanolin.

ive heard alot of dogs can have reaction to lanolin??? but maybe its like us some skin can be some not be!!

I was recommended Kamillosan (chamomile cream) for nursing mothers.  You can get it in Boots and other chemists.  I also make sure nails are trimmed regularly...

I would be cutting pups nails frequently, as, at 3 weeks they will definitely be hurting her.  Although I can't remember the name of it, if you have a look at the baby section in a supermarket, there is something for nappy rash - begins with an M - that's all I can remember, but I used it on a bitch with a raw vulva, when she became too fastidious at cleaning herself.  Used on recommendation from my vet.

Thanks everyone I am cutting their nails so I will use one on the creams suggested.

Metanium is the only nappy rash stuff I can think of beginning with M, it stays as a chalky barrier unlike other products which get absorbed or rubbed off, think I would prefer to use a product made for humans who are breast feeding.

Anything which says do not ingest I would avoid.

YAY!!!   Yes, that's the one.  It was great, and the vet told me to use it, knowing that this bitch kept licking herself.  She was fine, and healed very quickly.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, knowing that it did my toy breed no harm.
