Topic Dog Boards / General / Greater swiss mountain dog???

Ok after ghoing round discover dogs last year working out which breed myself and my partner wanted, we narrowed it down to a great dane (but not a hope for us as they dont like loud people and I am LOUD!! and a grey hound, but this year the new dog came up, the greater swiss mountain dog. We both fell in love. Only 50 in the country but fully health tested and only KC tregistered april 2010 I believe.
We both love the breed from what we saw at discover dogs at crufts (and the people there were lovely)  and want to know more about them as looking for at least 3 years time!!!! Would ideally like a rescue but more likely we will end up with a puppy as I bet rescues dont come up that often as they are not a popular breed (and puppy farmers havnt got hold of them!!!!) if I got a puppy I would also look at showing, and trhink my partner would back me (hey we have 3 years at least LMAO)
For those that havnt a clue what I am on about look at

Lea,

I'm sure JG has a friend with one?? lol

They were lovely people on the Swissy stand I agree.. Lovely dogs there on the friday too :-)

Why not join their breed club too, then you can get involved with the breed and learn more.
http://www.gsmd.org.uk/ - Normally most breed clubs are £11-£15p/year, not a lot...

Just for interest Lea, what have you been told about Danes not liking loud people ... ? Can't say I've ever come across a well-bred Dane I would expect to have a problem with this?

Doesn't seem to be a problem for the GD that lives next door to us ......... :) :)

I have been saying for the past 2 year i would love a gsmd first met them at discover dogs at earls court and i have always like the bmd but my allergies tend to flare up around longer haired dogs, lovley dogs but i would personally wait a few years and maybe import one (well thats my plan anyway lol)

why does it say not a vulnerable breed if only 50 in the country?

>why does it say not a vulnerable breed if only 50 in the country?

Persumably because they are not endangered and are bred in sufficient numbers in their country of origin or other parts of the world.

No shortage of Grt Swis in Switzerland !! I do like the build and size of them but have to say I preffer the sheer cuddlyness of my Bernies.
Mind you easier to keep clean on wet yucky days like today :-P

The only breeds described as 'vulnerable' are those that are natine to Britain and Ireland.

Definitely a few in Switzerland! Having grown up in Switzerland and having worked on a farm guarded by a Swissy, I am very keen to get one one day! They are fabulous allrounder dogs and I am so pleased that they are now in this country too.

We were told at Discover dogs that Great Danes do not like loud houses, or being left on their own. Well I am a loud person as soome people on here can confirm, and both myself and my partner work. So the dogs are left on their own for periods of time. We would always have 2 dogs so they have company.
Hopefully the GSMD will increase in numbers :)
And I agree, they do look like the bernese but with alot less hair, my kind of dog :) :) :)

They do look lovely Lea, I also love the look of the Bernes but prefer dogs requiring less grooming.
