- By welshie [gb] Date 11.03.11 15:28 UTC
went along to keep my appointment for eye test at crufts BUT  they coulnt find his microchip used 2 different machines no sign so coulnt have eye test done went to my vets this am he tried NO MICROCHIP
WAS GOING ABROAD BUT CANT NOW AS RABIES TEST HAS TO BE DONE ALL OVER AGAIN
So CHECK  your micro chip is working before any health tests you have to have done and before you go abroad
thank goodness all 3 dogs i took got placed (which saved the day)

A friend had something similar happen before a rabies jab and she managed to locate the chip with a more powerful scanner. I think it was one they use on horses. Once she knew the exact spot they were able to find it with a normal scanner and do the rabies jab.

Surely in cases like this you don't have to re-do everything again?  I wd. be getting in touch with the microchip company and charging them.

have done and its the actual manufactorers who have to pay for what needs to be redone

An xray should locate the chip.

Worth trying again one of our chips travelled down a front leg and then back up into the front of her chest just under the skin vet removed it and rechipped.

trouble with xray if in awkward plce to remove could leave a scar depending on where it was so vet said he recommended i re chip which i have done and have had to start all over again for rabies blood test etc and send for new k/c reg cert and irish k/c cert
what a nightmare think now ill get his chip checked  2/3 times a year i had nearly booked for the world show thank goodness i never

To be honest you didn't miss mcuh regarding eye testing, because I don't think the vet had a clue what he was doing!!! Certainly when it came to looking at my Neapolitan Mastiff eye. Made some shocking & quite disturbing comments

Ring round the area to see if any of the vets have a horse scanner - then get them to slowly go over the whole of your dog, especially the front of the chest and shoulder area.

Have you ever had the chip checked since being inserted? It could have fallen out at the time or on the way home
- By welshie [gb] Date 14.03.11 19:52 UTC
yes had it checked last year when he had his eye test
- By Sarah Date 14.03.11 20:25 UTC
So I would definately try a larger scanner to find it :-)

you need to get him her xrayed full body, its possible the chip is malfunctioning.

I took my dogs to donate blood and it took ages to find my males chip. In the end it was found in his elbow!!! Hope everything works out and you manage to find it instead of having to start from scratch with your dogs tests.

I thought there was a procedure in place to have the dog x-rayed and the chip removed, replaced and the old sent off to the original manufacturers where they could then do further scans to try and get the number off the chip - if they do the dog shouldn't need to go through the six months wait again.

Yup, according to this site;
http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/documents/ah-top10-passport-tips.pdf

it says;
If the microchip has failed, the veterinarian should remove the old microchip and insert a new microchip at the same time (and check it can be read immediately after insertion). l The veterinarian must then send the failed microchip to the manufacturer to see if it can be  read/identified. l If the microchip can be read, the veterinarian will obtain a record/letter confirming this from the manufacturer. l The veterinarian must then record the details in Section XI 'Others' of the passport, in the following format:  "Microchip number [insert new number] was inserted on removal of failed microchip number [insert original chip number] which was originally implanted on [date] and
sent to the manufacturer on [date] which read the number successfully on [date]" If at all unsure as to Defra procedures, your vet should
contact their local Animal Health Office prior to insertion of a new chip, any surgical procedures, or amendments to your pet's passport.
l In the event of the manufacturer being unable to identify the number of the faulty chip, your pet will have to be fully re-prepared using the new microchip number as the means of identification.
