Im asking this for my friend who for some reason has problems getting on the foum (dont ask my why i dont know) any way she is applying to become an acredited breeder and has health tested dogs she has seen a stud she would one day like to breed her girl to howvever the stud is in another country (ive forgotton which) who is reg with there kennel club. She doesnt think it would be possible to go over with her girl (no passport for one) and would not want her to go over alown so she was wondering could she import semen? and if so how would it all work so that she could KC reg any resulting pups? well that is if they could be registered, can they?

It's possible if the dog has already produced a litter.  Bitches can be maiden, but dogs need to have already produced a litter.

It's a lot of DEFRA red tape and faff.  I was going to import semen from Sweden, but by the time I looked at all the intricacies and costs involved it was going to cost me just as much to go myself as it would to import, so I changed track and will be heading over sometime in May or June.

There are a few companies that will assist you with the information you need.  One is Fit and Fertile.  I can't remember the others off the top of my head as my emails with them are on my main computer and I'm on my netbook now, but there were about 2 or 3 others that I got a really good feeling about.  If you do an internet search, I think I did something like 'importing canine semen'.

As for registering, as I said, it's do-able if the dog has already sired a litter.  You would need to fill out the appropriate Kennel Club form for registration of an AI litter (do a search on the KC site and it is there - if you have trouble let me know as I think I still have the form filed on my computer).  If the dog has his ATC number then you wouldn't need anything other than the registration forms signed by the owner.  If he doesn't you will need to submit a 3 gen pedigree and a few other things (these can be found on the KC website as well to do with registration of an overseas sire) and I'm sure others will come along soon who will have more specific info than that.  The pups will need to be registered by post - not online due to the overseas registration.

Oh, and to import semen the dog must have his PETS Passport for the semen to travel otherwise it will need to be quarantined for 6 months.

Hope this helps to give you a starting point.  I'm sure others will be along soon who've actually done it rather than just researched and given up on the idea like me LOL

people have AI liters all the time. its very expensive in terms of the professionals you need to get involved to make it a success but it happes all the time and is very clearcut in terms of paperwork.

I looked into AI and this was the main downer:

>Oh, and to import semen the dog must have his PETS Passport for the semen to travel otherwise it will need to be quarantined for 6 months.

Unless the dog happens to have a Pet Passport anyway, it is asking a lot to request that the stud owner gets it just for this.  I guess you could offer to pay for it...

As Wendy says in the end it is probably better to go yourself.

I have just registered my litter with using an overseas stud and the last stumbling block was confirming that the dog had the health tests required for my breed under the KCABS.

They won't actually put them on the paperwork (except for the Optigen DNA tests)

thank you guys great info and ill pass it all on, wow i had no idea that the stud would need a passport to send the semen.

looks like she might have to get herself a passport.

thanks again

Replying to the OP really but just using your words as they are so helpful. As we've just had Crufts, you could look at the catalogue and see which overseas dogs are entered. Those dogs will already have their passports so there won't be quarantine problems with importing their semen. Some breeds have more of a presence at Crufts than others. Your friend could check with the kennel she has in mind to see if the dog she has in mind is going to be suitable. Good luck to her.

We have just come back from a very expensive and abortive trip to Sweden to mate Daisy, as we didn't go down the AI route for many of the reasons above.     She was taken over by a friend, as I had just had my knee op (why do they come in season at such inconvenient times??), and was just going over by the time I was allowed to travel myself.

I would have been better forgetting the whole exercise; the whole trip completely upset her season.    She seemed to stop and start.    She was still on when I got there , I took my microscope and did a smear, but was fidgetting a bit with the dog.   As soon as we tried to hold her, the dog just stopped working.   Happened each time until we gracefully gave up.

The harder you try......:-(
