Topic Dog Boards / Health / Allergic reaction!

My Golden retriever puppy, almost 7 months old, had a case of Gastro Enteritis earlier this week. She had several injections at the vet and made an almost immediate recovery. She has been on Clavaseptin antibiotics since Wednesday evening.

Whereas she has been back to her normal self energywise, last night, about 90 minutes after having her dinner (+ meds), I noticed that her face was looking kind of puffy. She was really preoccupied with chewing her feet/legs, rubbing her ears, face and generally scratching for all she was worth. Her muzzle came up in big bumps, about 50p sizes, and the top of her nose was looking quite swollen and bumpy.

I called the emergency vet who suggested I give Piriton which I did, but the itchiness kept her very unsettled all night (I tried to take her up to bed, came down to sleep on the sofa and eventually put her in the dog room with the others at about 3 am because she was so restless & kept sticking her nose on me whenever I so much as breathed!).

So this morning, straight to our vet who had a look at her and said there wasn't much we could do as these things tend to flare up and go away again fairly quickly. He advised to keep giving her the Piriton 3 times daily until the reaction goes. I'm waiting for my daughter to arrive so we can bath her, as this may help to calm her skin.

She is at present still chewing and scratching constantly even though she has had a Piriton tablet. I'm at a bit of a loss to know what to do to make her more comfortable.

She did dig a small hole in one of my borders yesterday, happened very quickly & have no idea if she could have eaten something. She had a walk in the afternoon with my other 2 dogs and at several points in the walk had a good roll in the grass (am thinking this could be it?). Other than that there are signs that the stinging nettles are starting to grow up (could it be this?). She stuck her head into a fox's burrow at one point, but so did the other two - they're fine. The only other thing I can think of is I washed their vetbed & used a different fabric conditioner. Oh, and as she's had an upset stomach, she had some rice and boiled chicken mixed into her regular food as we're weaning her back onto it (she had rice/white fish previously).

Poor baby doesn't know what to do with herself...

Has anyone else had a similar reaction and did you ever find out what the cause was?

Can't wait for my daughter to get here so we can give her a bath...

Thanks
Tanya

Yes - a couple of years ago my dog suddenly had bumps all over his muzzle - not as big but probably about the size of a penny. He had six or seven lumps on his muzzle and up towards his eyes. He'd been out in the garden but there was nothing unusual out there.

I remembered the Piriton and gave him a tablet, and decided to walk him round to a nearby vets where a friend of mine worked as a vet nurse, to get advice. By the tiime we got there, 20 mins later, the bumps had gone!

Never knew what caused it, we thought perhaps an ant bite or insect sting, and it's not recurred again.

Whistler had a sting and we ended up with a golf ball on his nose, we took him to the vet and he had piriton and it went down, he hid behind the sofa all afternoon and looked so sad for himself - with a golf ball sized lump on his muzzle.
