Hi all - new and panicing Mum !
Pups 3 days old today, all but one back to birth weight.Mum has been fine - pooh's and wee's and a bit of blood waash.Smells very much like wee despite being washed with salty warm water ( not using anything smelly as want to be able to detect foul smells). However an hour ago she was whining a bit whilst feeding them - very unlike her - could this be the start of eclampsia? what should i be looking out for?

It is probably after pains caused by the womb contracting back as she feeds :-)

thanks cocopop - i hope so.
Is it ok now to give her milk based products ? rice pud etc ? goats milk ? to keep her strength up?

I don't know what other, more experienced breeders would do but when our Golden had 11 pups we never gave her any milky products, just upped her food as her milk production increased and always had water available, she happily fed pups till they left at eight weeks :)

Just keep an eye on her and if possible take her temperature. I nearly lost a bitch after a litter with infection of the womb if worried take her to the vet to be on the safe side.

preeclampsia i have personal seen the bitch looked like the lights were on and nobody was home, rushed to the vets blood tests for toxins and an emergency csection all pups were dead womb was beyond repair and had to be spayed we had been rung to go and ge her by the time we got there she had had a massive hemmorage from her bowels and went into total organ failure, four vets and eight techs were trying to save her to no avial and she died in my arms at 2 years and 10 months the moral of this is if you think it is eclampsia get here to the vets fast time is of the essence here and will make the diffrerence bewtween life and death it is 11 years ago now we still breed when we want a puppy but are parioned with the bitches they sneeze the wrong way they are at the vets and yes we are still at the same vets they tried everything in their power to save her

Eclampsia...clinical signs -muscular tremors or rigidity, rapid respiratory rate, convulsions, hyperthermia (high body temperature), body stiffness as shown by difficulty in walking, nervousness, panting, and restlessness. If left unattended, these signs can possibly lead to coma and death of the dog.

Eclampsia constitutes a clinical emergency so look for the first signs...namely glassy eyed vacant stare, panting and sometimes licking plaster work or stone walls floor.

Dont meddle with her normal Calcium levels as this is a sure fire way to cause a metabolic imbalance. A good, protein rich, healthy diet and clean water is best.

temp is 102 - is this normal in whelping bitch?
- By Ghost [gb] Date 18.03.11 00:12 UTC
we have given her some dextrose drink as i dont think she was drinking much and the whelping room is 25 degree's and she is a double coat bitch.Have checked dischare, dark reddy brown, dosent smell foul, checked tummy, temp is 102 / 39.1 , she was digging a little this morning.keeps clenching tummy a little and is pulling tongue out like she is thirsty (hence giving chicken dextrose drink).Think she is tired as she just almost fell asleep sitting up.

They have a raised temperature during and after whelping. Slightly raised whilst metabolism is going flat out making milk.
This has the spin-of advantage - helps to keep new borns warm -snuggling with their mum.
Be careful not to over heat bitch with a heat lamp or such and she needs to be able to get away from any extra heat source provided.

She should settle down to serenity with her babes soon...... if she is still suffering contractions and discomfort, contact your vet.
