Topic Dog Boards / Health / Illness after Crufts

We exhibited on Friday and then manned the Discover Dogs stand on Saturday. I now have 4 out of my 6 dogs with chronic upset stomachs. Have taken my oldie (13) to the vets and he has no temperature so was told to starve for 24 hours and was prescribed tablets for 2 days to help with his symptoms. He is still unwell and will be going back tomorrow.
I spoke to my friend who we were with both days and her 2 dogs are ill with the same symptoms. I live in the South and she lives in the North of the country.
Has anyone heard of any other dogs falling ill after Crufts as I feel this must be where we picked up this bug.

Thanks

Sharon

No but I know plenty of people falling ill with bugs, including me.. I've got some form of gastric flu bug coming and going and its not nice :-(, as for dogs, no not heard anything on the working side of things currently.. Hope they get better soon x

One of my dogs had similar symptoms about 2 weeks ago.  We happened to be at the vets yesterday on another matter and I mentioned the upset stomach.  The vet said that there has been a lot of dogs presenting with the same symptoms so there must be some sort of bug going around.  My other dog was completely unaffected.

We were there by the Arena benching on Sunday as our dogs were on loan for the International Junior Handling Finals. A dog on the next bench was taken  to vet with diaorrhea and the Vet said he had seen several cases at Crufts so obviously something going round.

Apparently plenty going down with this at Crufts.
Vets were seeing dogs with upset tummies.

I must admit in the West car park I did see some bloody runny faeces.
Which did set off the alarm bells. I exhibited at Crufts on Friday and touching
wood none of mine down with it yet.

Know of one dog on the sunday down with it too.
That dog visited the vets at Crufts, again no temperature.
That's when they advised that they had seen quite a few cases of it
throughout the show.

Have friends living in the area who's dogs have suffered similar illness' before and since Crufts non of which had been to the show so possibly something localised to NEC.

Covered discover dogs on friday with one of my girls who's fine and not heard of any other breeders here who showed and come away with illness' in their dogs........................ as yet.  Human's on the other hand don't even go there lol

I know of two bitches who were shown on Thursday Hall 1 who have had upset tums - one who had D&V and high temperature - benched opposite me - touch wood nothing with my boy thankfully.

With so many dogs in one area from all over the world it wouldn't surprise me if your dog did pick something up at Crufts, however the dogs we took haven't got ill but our older boy whom we left at home has got this illness and he was left in Hampshire.

Hi Sharon

We had exactly the same with our dog after crufts last year, we had stayed the night in the crown plaza hotel, showed our dog on the Thursday, Friday evening when we had got home he was being voilently sick and had really bad diarrohea, later that night a friend from weymouth rang us to ask if our boy was ok (she didnt even know he was ill) we asked her why she asked this as no he was really poorly, she told us to get him to the vet immediately as her young dog was on a drip with the same symptoms they thought they were gona loose him.
Thankfully both dogs were fine a few days later, both too had raging temperatures.
My friend seemed to think it was duck poo around the lake that had caused it as we both walked the dogs round there.

Hope your dogs are fine soon

Thanks for all your replies, it certainly points to Crufts as the source of this illness. Still only have 4 out of my six with the bug so hopefully the other two will be OK, it's very quiet in my house at the moment, which is strange.

crufts is not necessarily the "source" of any illness. It merely is a place where dogs come into contact with many more dogs than they would usually! Its like schools...they dont cause illnesses, they just allow them to spread. If your dogs stayed in the house all day not contacting other dogs then they would be less likely to get d&v

Interestingly I was reading an item in one of the dog papers concerning the vet cover at Crufts and it mentioned the cases of stomach upsets they'd seen this year.
Have decided that I will be taking anti-bacterial wipes/spray for my benching and my dogs paws from now on as it's a week later and one of my others have come down with it. I guess I've been lucky in the past.

I think there is a 24 hour type of bug going round as my old girl was sick a few weeks ago. Just got up and threw all her meal up about 3 hours after eating it. Was sick again going to bed (all water). Refused any bedtime biscuit but was right as rain the next day and eating fine. No diarrhoea, just sick. I heard on the park that another two dogs that come down to the park had the same thing.

Have to say my two girls that I took are absolutely fine but my eldest girl has not been right the last few days.  Nothing that you can put your finger on but she's just not right.

We've had quite a few cases of upset tummies in dogs in the pst couple of weeks, none of whom had been to a show. There seems to be a bug going around generally.

I'm trying to think who I was talking to the other day, she'd had 2 dogs down with it too and I'm pretty sure it was someone who doesn't go to Crufts, so yes I think it's just a bug going round generally. Fingers crossed mine are ok so far!

there was a letter in dog world this week about an up set tummy bug going round, wonder if that's connected in some way.
