Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cestem v Drontal
- By Tyke757 [gb] Date 09.03.11 13:51 UTC
I have always used Drontal and never had a problem with it however I have now found a wormer by the name of Cestem and apart from the price and that it is liver flavoured cannot see that it is any different to Drontal.  One of our dogs has a very sensative tummy and is fine with Drontal and I go by the rule that if is ain't broke then don't fix it but at 30p a tablet difference I wonder if it is worth looking at.  Hoping to do a bulk buy at Crufts.

Cheers

L

I asked the chemist at Vetmedic about Cestem 12 months ago and he explained that it was exactly the same as Drontal.  Drontal is now outside 'copyright' (excuse the terminology but I can't remember his exact words) and it can now be made by any company.  I bought some as it was cheaper than Drontal, dogs were fine with it and I've used it ever since.

i do a bulk order for anyone at dog class (and a few that used to come) Got Cestem last year instead of drontal - no reported problems of anyone - about 30 different dogs in total as some people are multi dog)
there is a new spot-on flea treatment (fipronol) as the licence on front-line has now run out as well, adverts say up to25% cheaper so my lot have opted for that as well :-D

Special precautions for use in animals
The product is not recommended for use in puppies of less than 3 kg bodyweight.

This is on the product info sheet

What about adult dogs less than 3 kg?
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 09.03.11 19:40 UTC
Oral use.

15 mg/kg bodyweight febantel, 5 mg/kg pyrantel (as embonate) and 5 mg/kg praziquantel. This is equivalent to 1 tablet per 10 kg bodyweight, in one administration.

Dosages are as follows:
Body weight (kg)  Tablet quantity
3-5  ½

>5-10  1
>10-15  1 ½
>15-20  2

The tablets can be given to the dog with or without food. No starvation is needed before or after treatment.
To ensure administration of a correct dose, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible.

Looks like not recommended, one of the stands at crufts should have a pharmacist who could answer.

Tyke 757:  "30p a tablet difference"

I buy most stuff from www.vetuk.co.uk and have always found them to be good value.  I've just checked their prices for Drontal Plus (£5:10 per tablet) and Cestem (£3:07 per tablet), so a £2 :03 difference on there.

Where am I going wrong?
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 13.03.11 16:45 UTC
You are going to the wrong firm :-D

This is what Vetmedic price Cestem at on their website
Quantity Range Price
1+ £1.48
8+ £1.40
24+ £1.32
104+ £1.24

so your £3.07 a tablet is over double the price

I collected a list for class - about 20 people, some with multiple dogs and they get enough for a year - and got 273 wormers at crufts  with the show offer and qty they work out to 93p each, I have a lot of happy people come to class :-D :-D

I've just checked their prices for Drontal Plus (£5:10 per tablet)

Just looked at vetuk website, £1.67 each for Drontal Plus!  The ones for £5.10 are Drontal Plus XL.

I ordered Cestem yesterday from Vetmedic, first time ordering them as we've always used Drontal Plus.  There's an offer on just now Buy 3 tablets and get one free.

Hyperdrug (canine chemist) have their own generic Drontal with the same levels of ingredients called Easimax which was cheaper, at Crufts I paid £24.99 for 24 tablets for 10kg dog (2 for each of my 20kg dogs).

I bought the new fipronol at Crufts to try.. so far no problems and put it on Sunday.

You're going wrong by buying from the wrong company! Drontal Plus tablets each, I paid £1.50 at Crufts :-)
- By ClaireyS Date 16.03.11 21:12 UTC
I got 8 Cestem tablets at Crufts for £8.40 .....  £1.05 each :)

- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.03.11 08:06 UTC
Fiprinol is the name of the active chemical in Frontline, not a brand name.
- By tonia [gb] Date 17.03.11 12:10 UTC
