I just heard a "professional" dog walker say on Crufts that she walks up to 10 miles a day easily with her 6-month old puppy! Not sure if she mentioned what breed he is.

I think she said A westie. Whatever breed its far too much. x

Westie x Cairn, I thought? Whatever, it had me yelling WHAAAAAATTTT???!!! at the Tv when she said 10 miles!
Yes, I was really shocked. I wouldn´t want her walking my dog.

Yes I heard too, but I got the impression she was trying to "keep up" with Claire Baldwin, who had just said she was in training for a marathon walk and had discovered that 10 miles was no problem to her dog. The "Pro Dog Walker" lady did not seem the sharpest tool in the box.

Unbelievably judgemental statement which I find appalling.
Surely education - pitched to whatever level is appropriate - is the only way forward.

Surely she said that as a professional dog walker she walks up to 10 miles a day with her various charges, rather than with her puppy?

I think she said that she walked her own puppy a westie 10 miles.?
yes, she definitely said she walked her own puppy for 10 miles.
> yes, she definitely said she walked her own puppy for 10 miles.
Yikes!

what made me :-O was when the women with the Boxer said he was a Cat killer hated cats looooool,
OMG!! i thought ,
Now i know the Boxer probably hasn't literally killed any cats, (least i hope not :-( )
but Awwwww think she could have just missed that piece out was like to much information lol,
think even the presenter wanted to hurry up on past that comment, opps!! lol

Do you mean generally or relating to puppy walking? I would not dream of saying this lady was uneducated, as I have no way of knowing this, however people have a very wide range of levels of intelligence and the way I read the interview was that the lady simply picked up on CB's statement and repeated the distance, much as a child would do when trying to "keep up" with someone in a conversation.
>what made me :-o was when the women with the Boxer said he was a Cat killer hated cats looooool, OMG!! i thought
I thought that woman didn't do herself or her breed any favours at all. The cat killer statement; the fact that she seemed unable to answer questions about her dogs behaviour in the house and told us he lived in kennels; and the fact that he and another male hated each other so much that they weren't ever allowed to meet.
I thought it played into the hands of those that might accuse show people of treating their dogs like commodities rather than pets. :(
On the flip side weren't the PBGV couple lovely and he couldn't stop kissing his dog in the ring - v sweet :) And the Brazilian Wire Fox Terrier owner was quite charming, and so thrilled with his dog, although I suspect his English handler didn't really want the dog to be leaving...
The people really do make a diference to how their breed is perceived

Totally agree about the boxer lady, I was cringeing at some of the things she was saying.
With regards to the "pro" dog walker lady, ive just watched it on sky+ and she definitely said she walked 10 miles with her 6 month old puppy, although to be honest I think it was a bit of bravado !
To be honest I dont think I would be happy with her walking my dogs, she just decided one day that she likes walking and likes dogs so why not set up a dog walking business .... she didnt even own her own dog at that point, think I would want better credentials than that !

YES!!! I loved it. The difference between a dog lover and a dog owner. The dog was a happy little thing, and moved so well.

I do not believe for a second she has walked her dog 10 miles. The presenter said she had walked 10 miles and her dog had no problem, it was only after that pretty much straight away the dog walker said she had taken her dog on a 10 mile walk. I think it was just showing off imo. But you never know...
> YES!!! I loved it.
Looked like he was going to burst into tears - lovely to see how happy he was and how much he loves his dog!

Dab, Shamefully some of the big breeders do think like this though, sad as it is, its true..
I missed friday's chat with the pastoral and working winners as was still travelling home, but from what has been said on here, nope doesn't help the cause for people who enjoy dog showing as a hobby or Boxers as a breed..
And more so on that note i'm even more pushed to wanting the Flattie to go BIS!!!
Totally agree about the boxer lady, I was cringeing at some of the things she was saying.
Me too and I own Boxers :-( I have found that some of the breed can, and will, happily tolerate and interact with cats but others will not. FACT. I cringed when she made the comment. Same too when she mentioned the problem with Max and one of the other males. I would rather aim for keeping dogs that get on together. My lot have always been house dogs, male and female, and accept each other as 'pals'. If I had aggression problems as described I would give them up. No pleasure in constantly watching out for trouble.

I'm with you all the way on this! I have heard people say that they have to keep dogs in separate rooms, and that would be too much worry for me. Having to be so careful that the doors stayed closed. Like you say, mine are pals. Although my attitude has always been that they will get on - because I say so! :-)
I only have to hear a hint of discord and I remind them that if there is any growling to be done - then I'll do it! :-)

When the boxer owner said "he's a cat killer mind" claire baldings reponse was "well most boxers are" !!!!!!!!!!!
I only have to hear a hint of discord and I remind them that if there is any growling to be done - then I'll do it!Yeap must say that i had my concerns with my Rottie and my Bully boy as they have had a couple of fights over food issues in past , both times it happened after the night we had taken bully to training class almost like the bully was coming home with an attitude,
i will say i was worried i was going to have to rehome him,
my 3 all sleep together in same room on their own beds tho,
but then i changed my attitude toward my bully and i totally stopped any favoritism toward him (which was hard for me as he was my baby boy ;-) )
but its a much better house hold since i put certain things in place ,
clearly its worked as they were both playing in the garden today like a pair of pups and we all had such fun last night when i tried out some heal to music with them all lol, if you'd have said id see that a year ago i would have thought NO WAY! ,

Yes, I was cringing at the boxer lady too, didn't anyone tell her not to say anything that could be misconstrued like that!!! When I won a class at DD a year or two back they interviewed me with Frank Kane (that was scary!) and basically told me to say how happy and healthy my dog was, which is true anyway, but this is a much bigger audience than that!!!

I said straight away on FB that some people should learn to shut up! I think it may have lost her place for BIS if the judge heard any of it!

Of course you would think it would be common sense to watch what you say and concentrate on the good points of your dog,
maybe she was rambling cause she was nervous and excited but def dont think she done her or her dog any favors, i was rather stunned at it, poor dog not his fault bless him he was still lovely tho even if the owner/handler was a bit of a twat! lol lol x

haahaa Lily Mc has a great signature on her posts that boxer women could have well done with taking heed to ;-)

On the flip side, l don't think it uncommon for dogs used at stud, having to be kept separated. It's the old testosterone thingy LOL. I agree tho', that she would have been better to have kept that, to herself. But isn't he absolutely beautiful?

OHHHHH I Think their all amazing the work that people put in is amazing to,

I was amazed at the Boxer owner too, not very telly savvy !.
Did anyone else notice the comment the owner of the winning GSD made ? I'm positive he said that as he wasn't in great health he exercised his dog from the car !!!!, I'm 99.9 % that's illegal, and downright dangerous to boot.

Glad someone else mentioned that..;-)
She looked like a bag of s***, you'd of thought that for something like Crufts she could make more of an effort. It doesn't take much to put on a suit jacket or even a smart top..
>Did anyone else notice the comment the owner of the winning GSD made ? I'm positive he said that as he wasn't in great health he exercised his dog from the car !!!!,
yes, I noticed that, im sure he said the dog ran behind the car ..... could be mistaken though.
>and the clothes she was wearing!
her clothes were commented on last time she won, infact she might have been wearing the same thing .... maybe its her lucky outfit lol !
Yes I remember she looked scruffy last time too
I always find it rather endearing to see some Group winners, who had obviously not expected to be there, in borrowed jackets or last nights pyjama's (!) BUT the Boxer woman had no such excuse as she's been there before. Good haircut though!
I had a smile at the Afghan lady with her drifty wafty trousers to match her drifty wafty dog - they made quite a stylish pair :)

I don't want to sound churlish LOL, but surely Crufts is a DOG SHOW, not a FASHION SHOW.
>but surely Crufts is a DOG SHOW, not a FASHION SHOW
Absolutely it is but some handlers dress to disappear allowing their dog to shine, some dress like they are in a fashion show and the dog merely an accessory, and some like the Boxer lady look as if they don't care and are wearing kennel gear with bib and brushes :)

> I don't want to sound churlish LOL, but surely Crufts is a DOG SHOW, not a FASHION SHOW.
That is true but some people do nothing to enhance their dogs as you can't take your eyes off what the handler is wearing. I have see people with ill fitting bras and vpl's that mean you aren't looking at the dog but rather the fashion faux pas of the handler. IMO, the handler should be wearing something the complements the dogs colouring and style.

When l am at Crufts, the dogs are so superb, that l can't take my eyes off them, and l never really notice what the handlers are wearing. Having said that, l was always told, to wear colours/clothes which do not detract, but enhance your dog.

Did notice a girl in white tights with a white dog, made checking the dogs outline very difficult but did not stop her getting BOB and I think short-listed.

I have to say i really liked the boxer in the ring, but the owner also made me cringe....but i would imagine on tv the nerves would take over, well they would for me :)

i didnt hear the boxer owners comments although I was cringing at the WFT new owner who basically made the poor dog appear like a commodity he had aqquired with little thought of anything other than where he was going to campaign it across the Americas. Not for public TV in my opinion :( And I agree with the person who said the dog walker wasnt the sharpest tool. She clearly wasnt a professional dg walker as she seems to work in a supermarket all day......and I doubt if she could even recognise 10 nmiles let alone walk it......but it was certainly a very stupid thing to say. :( Thankfully only one more night of tortuous tv to go!!
I didnt see the GSD owners comments either but if under the RIGHT circumstances, and in the RIGHT CONDITIONS,then I see nothing wrong with this being part of the dogs excercise routine, and certainly we take ours to run alongside the quadbike quite often, as its an excellent way of doing short fast gallop bursts across the field.

Agree about the WFT owner, I said to my OH I wonder if it will be allowed to be a dog at some point.

Ohhhh DAB, I Thought the Afghan was so elegant when it walked i didnt notice her outfit,, as for the boxer women well come on you lot now tut tut tut!,
Lets Not get to Personal now,, play fair Girls,, loooool,
Imean i just took her as someone from my Local council estate and theirs nothing wrong with that! loooooooooooooooooooooooooool,
opppps sorry av i been tad naughty xxxx
I doubt if she could even recognise 10 miles let alone walk was exactly what i thought!
some like the Boxer lady look as if they don't care and are wearing kennel gear with bib and brushesOHHH Stop your Cracking me up here me ribs are hurting loool, ,
I don't suppose Anyone has to dress up then really and Boxer Lady just showed that, Nice dog Shame about them yuk Cerise trousers! lololololol,
But really in truth come on your AT CRUFTS, FGS!!! Make the effort at least,

Even my OH commented on the Boxer ladies awful pink trousers - he said she looked like someone hed bump into dog walking round our estate [ our estate being the one right next door to one featured on a BBC documentary about drug abuse, and though its improved it is still one of the less desirable areas in town!].
Much cringe at some of the people interviewed but, thats what happens when you get Joe Public on telly, and they are being interviewed by people who don't tend to interview Joe Public all that often, and are talkign about a subject they may not know quite so much about.
I doubt Clare Balding has anywhere near as tough a job interviewing the owners of winning racehorses, or interviewing eventers as they finish their xc phases.....

Morning all,
Hope you all had a good time at Crufts. Just read this thread, are we not getting a little personal from the safety of our keyboards?
Thanks,
