forgot to ask while at Crufts yesterday. I need a good whitening shampoo. My dogs white bits especially feet often seem slightly grubby even after a bath. Quite possibly because they spend lots of time playing in mud. Can anyone recommend a good whitening shampoo, or anything else to brighten/ clean their white bits. I have tried chalk but doesn't seem to do much. Thanks

After much discussion on another thread re use of optical brighteners/bleach to achieve the whiter than white look, it all depends on how much you want to use chemicals to achieve "that look." I won't use bleach or optical brighteners on my dogs so Chris Christensen and many others are off limits for us. I am currently trying out Doreen Paige--clarifying shampoo first, then their white shampoo which is bleach free and then an evening primrose conditioner--it's not a high lather shampoo but really does the job. I use this on a Welsh springer who enjoys turning himself into a canine black and white minstrel--the day before Crufts he found a brand new clay lined pond and came out with enough clay to make a teapot :( thanks Doreen Paige for sorting the b****r out! Cowboy Magic also seems popular if you don't mind bleach

After looking on there website and ingredients it says that they don't use bleach??? what am i missing?1

Hi Boody, the CC products use optical brighteners, similar to laundry detergents. Optical brighteners are benzene based and can be absorbed through the skin. Here's a summary of effects:

"Contact with low to moderate levels of benzene for a short time can cause headaches, vomiting, disorientation, shakiness, elevated heart rate, and loss of consciousness. Very high levels of exposure can be fatal. People who work with benzene or who are exposed to it over a long period of time are at the highest risk for developing benzene-related illnesses, which range from anemia to cancer."

I use plush puppy whitening shampoo. :)

I have used it and liked it too, only draw back is it's expensive for such a small bottle.
