Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 4 week old pup not eating
- By lucysmith [gb] Date 09.03.11 16:52 UTC
Hi All , i would appreciate some advice , i have a litter of 13 LB pups, all have been doing great and weaning has been easy, they love their food. However, since this morning one of the bitch pups has refused to eat, she is normally a real piggy too. She is happy to feed from mum but not eat any of the puppy mush. I phoned the vet who said as long as she is feeding from mum then not to worry, but i am worried. She is a litle bit quiet too. I would rather not take her to the vets unless i have to as i am worried about her picking up a bug from there.
Any ideas ????

Is she constipated?

Funnily enough that was my first thought too. She doesn't appear to be straining and mum is still cleaning them all , i have tried wiping her with a warm cotton wool ball but didn't get anything. She was such a piggy yesterday so i was wondering if she has eaten too much and is still full? Her belly is nice and fat but not hard.

Give her a tummy rub, i know this might sound odd but it may help her bowls.

Will give that a go Louise, thanks.

give her some boiled cooled water  then put her on your shoulder and give her a rub as you would a baby... dehydration can cause constipation.

Hi

Is pup any better today?  Sounds like she was being a greedy piggy.

She is extremely constipated , have given her cooled water and rubbed tum etc but still not much poo . Still feeding well from mum but reluctant to eat puppy slop , i have been rubbing her bum for her and very small hard pieces are coming but she is clearly uncomfortable.

Maybe ask the vet if she can have some liquid parafin to help her.  The poor little thing.

They are due to be wormed today funnily enough but not sure whether to as she is already uncomfortable . Spoke to vet , he is going to give me something for her , fingers crossed.

Vet has given me some lactulose for her , he said to worm her as they are due too , seems like a lot to do all at once don't you think ?

id worm her lucy 1st and see how she goes, if she hasnt pooed about 6/8 h after then give her small amount of lactulose ...i had same problem but after worming i didnt need to use it that did the trick ...good luck hun let me know how you get on.

Mine can go a little loose after worming so I might try that first and see if you still need the lactulose after.

how is she now did you worm them ???

Hi All , wormed them yesterday, this seemed to help her a bit but back to being constipated again today, gave a tiny drop of lactulose which has helped and she is now eating well again, fingers crossed it continues.
