Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Additional Milk??
- By panicbuttonuk [gb] Date 10.03.11 21:50 UTC
Hi

D Day approaching and I have been gathering advice reading book of he bitch and this forum. I just spoke to a friend who advised to top up the puppies with extra milk when there borne. Book of the Bitch advises against this until weaning starts and advises to rely on Mums healthy Milk that has antibodies etc.

Whats your view? I was also advised by friend not to use formula but a recipe made from Goats Milk eggs etc?

I was planning to do as the book advises and just go naturel until we need to wean. comments appreciated.

Panic :)

The quantity of mum's milk is determined by the amount of suckling done by the puppies. The more they suckle the more milk, of the ideal temperature, consistency and composition for the puppies, she makes. If you top them up then they won't suckle so much, so in turn she won't make so much milk. This is bad news; best by far not to interfere. In this case Nature definitely knows best.

I completely agree with JG , my girl is succesfully feeding a litter of 13 , she has plenty of milk and they are great , chunky pups. I certainly wouldn't intervene unless there is a specific reason to do so.
