This might seem a silly question to some -
if a pup isnt introduced at once to a crate when it is first brought into the home , will pup use the crate if it is bought a month or so after?

I use a crate and I think they are great but I know they are not for everyone ( each to their own ) :D

Mine took to it 9 months after....it was that, or pull his teeth out ;)....he wasn't keen on that option :p

He's only 10 weeks and we have every intention of using one but because we havent used one from day one of bringing him home , i thought i'd better check .We hope to get one in the next month .
Another question ,can anyone recommend any decent ones as I havent used one before . We hope to show in the future so it needs to be handy for transporting etc and hes a Staffy by the way ( with regards to size )

Is the one in the Argos big enough for a Staffy? It seems quite cheap compared to others at Pets at Home etc Mr Murphy would know;)

We used the Argos one for our Aussie - it is very good although it is getting a bit small for her now, but fine for short trips in the car.

I would advice gwetting one that has two doors, one in the dhort side and one in the long. This is very helpful when using in the car or a room, when the door opens the wrong way for the alloted space. In the long side it is much easier to get at your dog, in the shirt end is handy when putting in the car next to other stuff lengthways in!

I got a big one black powder coated finish from Moncaster wire products at very reasponable cost!

Having never used a crate before, I bought one to control an Irish Setter that decided to chew everything in sight when he turned 6 months old. I had absolutely no problem getting him used to it. I now have American Cockers as well as Irish Setters and they all have their own crate, I have three of the Argos ones, and they are great value for money. You should see an Irish squashing himself into the little crate, out of choice.Not his crate I hasten to add. I'm a big convert, and would encourage crate use for any breed bar none. Dawn R.

I bought mine from Ebay auctions, it was brand new as the seller is a pet shop in staffordshire. I sent a cheque the day I bought it and the crate arrived 2 days later !! I bought a 42 inch and it was £70 plus £7 postage by Securicor.The seller also added some Vet bedding for it.

I am not sure if we are allowed to advertise so I have not added the email address for the pet shop !

AND I would not be without it ! and puppy does not mind going in at night ...although he is getting wise to bed time and likes to have a game of chase me round the garden first!

we used a crate for Sonny after two weeks of being at home withought one - he was about 10 weeks at the time. He didn't like being in it during the day but at night was fine. He was house trained within two weeks - completely!
We hired ours from a local trainer. That's worth considering if you don't want to keep the crate. It cost us about five pounds a week or two.

Mine didn't after 4 days without (at 8 weeks old) - already posted re the pups real hatred of this crate - gave it up after 10 days! Never chewed or dirtied or wet in the house after that!

Good luck though, it works for alot of people -well, their dogs - but not mine - he found it just hateful

I once helped to crate train a 9 year old dog for a friend. It took some time, but less than 2 weeks...so I really think a month or two won't make much of a difference in a young puppy :) :) :) :D

If you go to eBay and type 'puppy cage' in the search engine, one result comes up at the moment (if nothing comes up click 'compleated items'). It's the same place mine came from, there's an email addy for the shop if you need a different size. I don't think you have to go thru eBay to purchase from the shop.

OMG, a Crate costing over 140 pounds???????? What was it made out of, steel???? Or am I just used to my med. vari-kennel that went for around $35 a couple of years ago and not knowing larger crate costs???

Vari kennels are much dearer here than in US eog!

Most people use the wire crates as they can be folded flat, the Vari kennels are bulkier and dearer.

The crate stocked by Argos (an in store catalogue company for household items and present items like jewelry) does one 30 inches long by 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall for around £55 pounds, which is cheaper than some of the specialist crate manufacturesrs.

I paid £70 for the next size up a couple of years ago (3feet by 2feet by 27inches, which my breed need), and this is about average, though I bought a bigger one again recently in a sale for a bit less than that, but black coated steel rather than the gold zinc plated.

Have just ordered one of the fabric crates, like the US Caban crates, and a 42 inch x 27 inch x 30 inch tall has cost £75! This is one of the better value companies selling them. I found that as I don't drive and get lifts to shows, I couldn't realy impose and bring along the heavy metal crate, but this lightweight one (7 1/2 pounds) I should be able to fit under the dogs in the hatch, or against the back seat!

going to shows with no where to tether a dog when you need the loo, or showing more than one dog, and having to ask someone to hold the lead of one while you are in the ring, reduces the pleasure of shows for me. so now hopefully I hgave it sorted!

Just a thought - has anyone ever used two crates, one on top of the other ? like bunk beds :D ?

Could only be for small dogs 'cos of the weight and you would probably have to carry the 'top' dog out (unless you put up a little ladder of course ;) ) Just wondered if this would work where space was at a premium.

I've sometimes put a pad on the top of my crate so the girls can jump up, lie comfortably, and look out the window :) It's the same size as what Barbara/ Brainless gave for the first measurements....
They are stackable due to indentations on the top and feet on the bottoms of each crate. But I've never had more than one med at a time...why? :)

Blimey, though I didn't know plastic could be that expensive, Barbara :) Yep, they're bulky, but when I travel by car, I break it in half and put the top under the bottom...the girls lie in the single halfshell together and are very happy :) We also have a small size cheap kennel that's not as well made, but they like to snuggle in there at night.... It's really fun watching them fit when they can't decide who gets it for the night, so they both go in :rolleyes:

Actually, crates used to be extremely expensive in the US. 14 years ago, I remember buying a Large size crate for around $100, but it was discounted because I was buying it direct from the airlines, not a pet shop. I had to go to the airport to pick it up. It would have been triple through the pet store. UPS mail order has caused the prices to really drop the prices during the last 10 years. Wholesellers will sell to the general public when certain money amounts are met.... KV Vet supply was one of the first :)

Going back to the Argos crate - are they quite lightweight ( i mean with regards to transporting around- not in their sturdiness ? ) And do they have just the one door ? I havent got a catalogue to hand .

Wouldn't say they are very light ! Carrying them erected out to the car is really a job for two - but folded down they have a carry handle. Not something that I enjoyed doing on a regular basis - a couple of times a week to training classes. Now she doesn't use it in the house it can be left in the car. It only has one door in the smaller side. Good value for money (about £35 I think) if you don't have a large dog. Don't know how long they would last, they seem sturdy enough - don't intend to have many puppies :) May be better to have two :(

We have a staff and the arogs crate. Its brilliant value for money and its big enough. I would say that the quality isn't as good as some of the steel type ones I have seen, but it isn't flimsy.

Some of mine were not introduced to crates until they were over ten years old but took to them very well :)

If you get one of the weekly dog papers (Dog World, Our Dogs) then they have quite a few adverts for various crates in the back and you could take a look to see which one you prefer
