I routinely flea all my dogs and cats every 3 months. However Minnie came into season the end of December so is due to be flea'd now.She is on day 55 of pregnancy so we were going to wait - but she has been nibbling quite a lot and I today noticed a few fleas on her :-( what do i do? i dont want them to run her down,i dont know what to do - I have flea'd all the other dogs but dont know what to do.Will speak to the vet on Monday - day 57.
Any advice ?

Frontline Spray should be fine for the pregnant bitch, it doesnt get absorbed into the blood stream. You certainly need to get rid of them before the puppies come along or they will be riddled. Also if your not already worming the bitch through pregnancy with panacur this is an extra reason as fleas cause some worms.

I had a bitch that was heavily pregnant one summer, and I found just one flea, and was worried.  My vet advised that Frontline spray is licensed for use on pregnant bitches.

The spray NOT spot on!  I blasted the offending flea and drowned it!  I can say that I would not hesitate to use it on a pregnant bitch again.  This was a very small breed, and she was perfectly fine.

Phew.
The little madam was digging a huge mad hole this morning - I know its instinct, but some time their instinct is pretty foolish - mud pit at the end of the garden by the woods with foxes in . . .how long would those babies survive?? lol

I believe the Frontline Spot-On is also licensed for use in pregnant bitches:

"Laboratory studies using fipronil have not shown any teratogenic or embryotoxic effect. The safety of the product was demonstrated in breeding, pregnant and lactating bitches treated with multiple consecutive doses with up to 3 times the maximum recommended dose. FRONTLINE Spot-On Dog can be used in breeding, pregnant and lactating bitches."

I usually use Capstar which is a tablet, although obviously can't say I've tried it on a pregnant dog... (just cos it's what I usually use for fleas, not liking these pesticides which humans can touch and which can get into the air etc).  Capstar can allegedly be used on pregnant bitches:

"Nitenpyram is neither embryotoxic nor teratogenic. It can be given to animals at all stages of pregnancy or lactation."

Also you need to use a household spray like Acclaim, RIP etc ( it kills fleas for a certain length of time) with insect growth regulator that stops fleas being able to breed.

Fleas are like Icebergs the main problem is hidden they breed in the environment and only hop onto the animal for meals.

have seen an offending cat flea today - all dogs and cats are up to date with frontline - but its so darn hot in house cos of pups - is the spray safe to use on lactating bitch?

Yes the spray is, but I would give the household stuff a go, except for the room where she is, then do that room when they can be moved for a couple of hours.
