Hi All
Wondered what your thoughts were on this. The most dominant bitch in our kennel was mated to our most dominant dog, both imports. They were mated on day 15 and day 17, when he was really keen and she was very happy to stand. We had a 45 minute tie both times. Then, on Day 20 he started really screaming after her, so we let him in and had another 45 minute tie. He carried on and on crying for days (which he does not usually do - only usually cries for about 5 days) Our other 2 males have not been interested in her since around day 17. Yesterday was day 25 and he was not as keen so we let them back together, keeping an eye on them and he was not really interested. Turned round to the cooker and bang, they were tied and turned in a flash - both were seemingly quite happy and comfy. I have never experienced this before - usually, they peak and then the interest tails off. I will have her scanned to try to ascertain when puppies are due. Just wondered if anyone else had ever experienced this strange type of season? Incidentally, last night he did not seem interested at all and today the whole pack is back together, with nobody interested in her at all.
Long ovulator or maybe a tart?
You decide.
Well I would say just a tart as the other two boys were not interested in her at all after about 17 days ........ perhaps it is true love? LOL! Will have her scanned to find out when she actually did get pregnant (if at all!)
Last year my bitch mated from around 14 days ... thought that was it then 2 weeks later mated again, days 28-32, or might have been 27-31!!. Pups were born to the 2nd set of matings. Thankfully I own the stud dog too, so had I not done so I would have had a mating for the 2nd year running with no pups :-(
This isn't very common, but I am now learning that there are a few people who have experienced such matings. Interestingly the same girl, who has just finished her first season since last year's pups was showing signs of doing the same! At least I now know it's likely to be the norm.
I ended up having her scanned a month after the first set of matings, and we went back a couple of weeks later for a free scan and were told there were pups. She had a very beautiful litter of 6 puppies :-)
We have to remember, these very clever doggies don't bother reading the 'text books' and they really like to keep our lives interesting :-) Good luck and I hope you're going to post up on here the result and if she's in pup, which set of matings to.
Thank you. Yes, I have to say it has never happened to us before. But he is an excellent stud and it is a good job we were using him as if we'd gone to an outsider, we would have had no idea about the second peak! I just hope that now she is actually having pups! I will post when I have had her scanned - you are so right - the dogs do not read the books but nature always seems to know best! I remember a vet bringing a bitch for mating to this particular dog and he would not mate her, despite the vet telling me that she had tested her and she was ready "now". I asked her to come back in 36 hours and he mated her immediately with 5 puppies resulting ....... he knew instinctively that she was not ready the first time!
When I took last year's girly for her first scan and saw no pups there (bearing in mind this was after the first batch of matings) the vet said I should have blood tested from day 7. Well, owning the stud dog anyway I didn't see any need to and by golly I was so pleased I didn't. I'd have been bankrupt! Blood testing from day 7, every few days until ......
I just love my dogs for keeping me on my toes, though sometimes wish they'd occasionally do things by the book :-) Look forward to hearing the outcome.

I wonder if something is going on with some bitches. Late last year I had a girl to my boy. A week later we went on holiday for 2 weeks. About 5 days after we got back from holiday the lady rang and said that her bitch was still bleeding and what did I think it was. I told her she must get her checked out at the Vet. She rang back to say that the Vet had told her that she was in season and he was going to do a progesterone test. A couple of days later he said she was ready and she came back to my boy. 9 weeks later she produced her litter. So technically there was nearly 4 weeks between her first mating and the mating that produced the pups! I have had another bitch to my boy 3 weeks ago and she has started bleeding again but this time when progesterone tested she has now gone off so we may have missed her. Some funny seasons seem to be going on.

My girl had a "funny" season last time, pretty sure it was a split season and she missed despite being mated on the 2nd part of the season. She had never had a split before and hopefully won't again. As you say, there seems to be loads of them being mentioned lately (or I am just noticing them more because of my girl)?

:-) :-) Yes! You are probably noticing them more! When I changed my car, to what I thought wasn't that popular a vehicle, all I saw were people driving "my" car. Because I was more likely to notice, obviously.
Yes it certainly seemed a bit like a double peak. The boys were absolutely manic around days 15 to 18 and then again from days 22 to 27 ......... thank goodness we had him here tho so we could take advantage! I just hope she is actually in whelp. The reason we bought her in was to eventually put her to our import male to have a completely outcross German line with the right instinct, temperament, health etc. Am not sure we will show any progeny because the showring will not like the German type - that is less important tho - it will give us a great base for the future, when mixed in with our English type show stuff. I am counting the day s to be able to scan her.
