My small breed girl whelped 7 puppies 5 days ago. First 4 were all born within 2 hrs .The next 2 4hrs later and then a little tiny 6hrs after that. All are doing great and gaining 20g at least a day. My tiny is only gaining about 2g. I have tried to supplement him with royal canin but it is coming down his nose which would suggest his tummy is full. Is there anything at all i can do to help him. Mum is definately struggling with so many so i have been giving her half at a time. Any help very much appreciated. Is there a better supplement i could get

My puppies wouldnt touch rc babydog no matter what I tried, also the bottles are just far to big for new born puppies. Milk running out the nose doesnt to me suggest the pup is full but instead that the milk flow is too fast.
I wuld highly reccomend trying Shirleys lactol available from pah and a lactol feeding bottle perfect for the job. When they are a little older then put them back on the royal canin.

Although if alternating the puppies always leave the little one on, one the best teat.

I agree that the Lactol feeding bottles are the only ones that suit my small breeds.  I don't actually use their milk, but the feeders are great.

Are you making the hole in the teat too large?

When I had to handfeed last year I used a syringe with lactol for the first 2 to 3 days before trying a tiny bottle and lactol (Shirleys).
I have a toy breed and had to make sure the hole in the teat wasnt to big and flowing to fast making her choke.

Thanks everyone. the teats that i am using are the ones provided in the Royal canin box. The teats are very thin compared to a normal one so will try and get a slightly larger teat with a slow milk flow. Will also get the shirleys lactol and see how i do with that. 5 pups are doing brilliant and 2 are struggling a bit but they are gaining small amounts of weight each day.I have been feeding mum eukanubha puppy kibble with chicken t ry and get some extra calories to help milk production.Anything else you can suggest to help increase the milk

just plany of fluids soak her food so its very wet once its done soaking, try giveing her puppy milk to drink inbetween food if she will drink it dont have to make it like you would for pups as this might give her the runs. if 4 are gaining well then it sounds like there getting plenty of milk ,try putting them on mum alltogether but put big pups at the front of milk bar which will help her milk come in alot better ,we had 9 pups and mum only had 8 nipples so i gave her them all at same time and had to keep moveing pups around plus some would go back after feeding to suckle out of 9 we had 3 smaller pups but now at 8weeks old there all the same size apart from 1 boy but hes only 1/2 pound less which is nothing in my breed.

Many thanks. Spoke to vet today and she said we just have to keep plodding away and doing what we are doing at the moment. Vet was surprised at her milk production at the back teats although look full are producing no milk where as the front 4 are. Mum is so reluctant to nurse but i have been forcing her to stay in box at least for 30 mins at a time to nurse. Little guy has gained 7g since yesterday. I hope its enough. Should i move big pups to the back of the milk bar where milk is not so flowing? Mum had another oxy jag today so im not sure if that will be making her feel a bit uncomfortable with tummy cramps. I nevr worried any where near this with 3 kids lol xx

I gave my girl water with lactol in it, just enough to cloud the water as she wouldnt take lactol on its own...it seemed to help her milk production and her food was really well soaked.
