Hi

I was on you tube and watched a bitch whelping. I have heard if the pups are strugling to breath to hold correctly swing down to clear their passages but on this video the women had a neat little rubber thing a little like the things you use for clearing camera lenses by blowing dust off. She squeezed it then poppoed in the the throat and released it sucked up any fluids/mucus and looked like it worked very well.

1) Is this recomended?
2) If its is safe and proper wher do you get from?

I never got on with them (but you can get them cheap on ebay)

I prefer the fast flick method to clear the passageways.  But I was probably using that before the aspirators were invented!  LOL  :-)

Did I get the name right anyone?  Apologies if it is wrong.

It's what everyone uses abroad for babies, it's a bulb syringe.  Also used for giving enemas to a constipated baby.

First time I saw one used was to clear nasal mucus build up from my baby half sister (to help ehr breathe comfortably) when she had a cold, her Mum is from Poland where ti is standard baby equipment.

The American book from the AKC on the care of Neonates advises it's use.

I've used a bulb syringe with both litters I've helped whelp. Really good and not expensive. We did "swing" one puppy who was sounding snuffly which helped too.

Not expensive & very handy thing to have in the whelping kit.

I've heard you have to be VERY careful to put it in with the air already squeeze out before you allow it to suck in the fluid, or you are blowing air and mucus down the lungs. Luckily the 2 in our litter 3 years ago naturally breathed without any trouble, phew!
