i saw in dogs today a thing by JH about it being ilegal to tack shar-pei eye lids. i have just seen an ad on the usual free site saying:

eyes tacked if needed by Shar Pei specialist

this is a KC accredited breeder!  so which one is talking bull?

No, it's not illegal to operate to correct eye problems like this, in Shar Pei or any other breed. It's against KC rules, however, to show them following surgery without written permission.

i thought it was ilegal if not done by a vet? these are done by a breeder

I would have taken that to mean a Shar Pei specialist vet - unless it says otherwise - You haven't put that on your post?

At a guess it's carefully worded to imply specialist vet ...

no it says shar-pei specialist, not vet and another ad names the person!

Actually if the initials you are talking about are CM, it does say specialist vet.

Permission to show unlikely to be granted by KC.

Does it actually say it's illegal?

How could it possible be illegal, might just as well say it's illegal to repair a hernia.
- By WestCoast Date 24.02.11 17:31 UTC
I agree Nova.  Just trying to find out exactly what is published as I don't read that publication. :)

i meant ilegal if your not a VET! JH was saying breeders are doing it themselves

Experienced breeders used to do it and I can't think it is now illegal, not something that should be relied on but it is a very temporary thing like taping ears, better not but in the case of the SP better done than not and an experienced breeder would know better where to place the stitch than most vets. If I remember correctly it is only for a few weeks until the dog grows into it's skin as if it is not done it can cause eye problems. Think it is done less and less these days as the breeders are managing to reduce the numbers of wrinkles on the head but not to do it when needed would in IMO be cruel.

Neither. It isn't illegal to tack sharp-pei eyes (although you can't show shar-peis that have had their eyes tacked. Theoretically). What I wrote is that it is illegal for breeders to do it themselves. It is a veterinary procedure. The case I highlighted was of a breeder who was using a staple gun to tack her own puppies' eyes - an ABS breeder at the time she did it. Now removed from the ABS, although still allowed to register her puppies.

Weren't the RSPCA advised of this breeders technique?  Surely it is something that they should be interested in.

Yes they were & it's an ongoing investigation.
