hi guys
Asking for a friend as no internet. My friends bitch is 11yrs old and is having a phantom i've told her to cut food down, excercise up and take her cuddly toys away. The thing I don't know is about spaying her as being an older dog if they do when should it be done.
If any one can help i'd really appreciate it.

if this is her first phantom at this age I would be concerned about pyometra ..I think the timing is halfway between seasons for a spay .

If she's otherwise fit and healthy then there's really no more risk than a younger bitch. It would be sensible to have her blood tested beforehand to make sure her kidneys etc are functioning properly, to make sure she's not at greater anaesthetic risk.

She should be spayed when all evidence of her phantom pregnancy have gone - no lactation etc.

I've just yesterday had my 6yr old spayed after a phantom - dead on 3 months from her last season (not planned timing, she's actually been put back already because of the phantom), and her boobs are now gone enough for me to feel comfortable having her done :-)

She is not so impressed :-P
